Brown Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

1 1/2 c Brown Sugar, Frimly Packed
1 ts Cinnamon
2/3 c Shortening
1/2 ts Cloves
2 Eggs, Large
1/4 ts Salt
2 tb Milk
2 c Unbleached Flour
1 tb Orange Rind, Grated
1 c Raisins
2 ts Baking Powder
1/2 c Nuts, Chopped, If Desired

Instructions:

Cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, Milk and orange rind. Stir together Baking powder, spices, salt and flour. Mix into Sugar mixture. Stir in raisins and nuts, if used. Drop dough by teaspoonfuls onto greased Cookie sheets. Bake at 350F about 10 to 12 minutes, or until done. Remove from Baking sheets and cool cookies on rack. Store in airtight tins. Makes about 4 to 5 dozen cookies.

The day was tailor-made for lovers; sunny and full of promise, patches of fluffy clouds playfully chasing one another in a robin’s egg blue sky. The flowers were blooming -azaleas and roses- and their sweet scent wafted in through the open window as Firanna Logan swore over the recipe.
It said shortening. Shortening what? Was it some sort of ... ritual one performed when cooking? Frustrated, covered in flour, Firanna edged the television blaring in the living-room an irritated glare.
Inside her, the child kicked, roused by its mother’s impatience, and the leading edge of her temper dulled as she laid a hand covered with spattered milk onto the swollen bump of her apron-shrouded belly. A smile flirted with one corner of her mouth as she felt the responsive bump against her stomach and, hope replenished, she turned her eyes back to the new pages of the recently-bought cookbook, drumming nails tipped in forest green on the pale counter.
She shouldn’t have refused Donna’s offer for help. The Amazonian princess certainly knew much more about cooking than she did, at least for now. Firanna was determined to get better. She did, after all, have a child on the way and it would be nice to be able to cook for her family.
“Okay... Okay...” She stabbed the round end of her wooden spoon onto the picture, and glanced at her own mixture, teeth gnawing on her lower-lip. It looked nothing like it. Whereas the mixture in the picture was a pale cocoa hue, her own resembled runny egg whites. Lumps of orange grind floated sickly in the mesh, bobbing along like fluorescent corks.
She’d gotten the idea to make Gar’s favourite snack –brown sugar cookies- during an intensive conversation with her friends. On the television, the method had looked so easy; dump and stir and pop into the oven, and that was it. The cook herself had commented on how easy it was.
Of course, she had had that coat hanger in mouth smile. Maybe the whole exhausting exertion of making these cookies had driven her out of her mind.
Rubbing her stomach in slow, soothing circles, Firanna backed away from the mixture as though it was poisonous, grabbed her car-keys and hurried out the door.

That night, when he came home, he found sugar cookies waiting for him. They were a delicious golden-brown and the smell that drifted from them was heavenly.
“Did you bake these yourself?” he asked his wife, stopping long enough to brush a kiss over her mouth as he nipped one out of the plate and bit into it.
So engrossed was he in eating it that he never saw the sly little smile that crossed her lips and the way she hurriedly poked a brown shopping bag out of the way as she answered with a confident ‘Yes’.
