If it's the mailman or a delivery guy, I don't mind (I keep my eyes and ears open during their ballpark time arrival). Otherwise I ignore other knocking (but hide and silence everything so the stranger won't persist in knocking). What's really scary though is having your home burglarized while you were out; a few days later when your roommate goes out with the only house car, you hear voices out front, and fear it to be the burglars (noticing the car not there) deciding to finish what they started *turns on lights, blasts up TV, holds cellphone, pepperspray, beloved small dogs for protection...* This happened with me just the other day...
