You found me lying on the sidewalk,
afraid to take my eyes off the stars
because I knew my dreams would be
pickpocketed the instant I did.

You were a self-proclaimed
artist who talked through
acrylics instead of words,
and one day when you ran out
of canvas and wall room,
you used me instead.

It just kind of stuck that way
until I retreated onto the streets
again, and your acrylics faded off
my skin and blended with the gray
concrete.

After the rain drenched my spirit,
I built a mud brick house with no
doors or windows so my dreams
couldn't run away on their own,

but one day I grabbed the pickaxe
I kept in my cage and said "I
want to live" and punctured
my sanctuary walls,
and my dreams
floated up like smoke and left
me forever.
