Omg what kind of war? Like between dragons?? If yes, that's how he could've met Dawn was fighting in that war. Dawn got those scars from a Nadder, that's why she hates them. He could've saved her from the Nadder and ran off with her Idk it just came to my mind

Like between two other empires; dragons were involved. AND OMG YESSSSS that's such a cool way for them to meet! maybe Dusk was from dark kingdom, and Dawn was from some sort of light kingdom. Cause like I said, Dusk was a royal pet and during the war he easing going to coward and flee XD but instead he saves Dawn :> I LOVE ITTTT
