Description

Found another way. I am just going to post this here so I can refer here if I forget again.
Hope it helps someone else too.

An alternative way to load the background image

1) At the top menu of your viewport, select the setting (gear) icon.

2) Select the 'spanner' icon next to the 'Background image' option.

3) A small window titled 'Set background image' should pop up. Pick the image file you want to load.

PS : By selecting the 'Background image' it can hide/show your current loaded background image.

Does this work in the beginner version of Meta 4?

Yup.

Btw take note that instead of the gear icon it's written "Disp" which stands for Display.
