Cool! Maybe I can even use it. Not that I use blender, but it got installed form a repo* and I didn't had time (OK I was lazy) to uninstal it... maybe it will come handy someday...

* repository - One of the linux / unix ways of installing software that gets me confused looks from windows people.

glad you like it !

yeah , at first i was - repo ? - and thought about a repossessed ( hope i spelled that right ) pc that had blender on it

thank god you explained a little linux language to me or i would have stuck with repossessed
i always want to install ubuntu but anytime i want to do it i completely forget about it until i see it again waiting in one of my folders , maybe i should make a wallpaper just saying :
remember , remember the installation of linux damnit

I use SuSE and I really should update (11.0) but I'm lazy... umm... it works I still find packages for it so I don't see the point yet. I wrote a "Why am I Linux user" rant in my journal some weeks ago too if you are interested.

Basically repo's are online download places / libraries of software packages* for automatic or manual install. Pretty convenient actually... but automatic updates can result in "huh?" moments.

* The script type install that is the most common under windows is almost unknown in linux (I saw 1 such thing in 7 or so years).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xylomon In reply to Mali-chan [2011-08-18 12:30:29 +0000 UTC]

i just read your rant and i must say that we both share pretty much the same view on things , i mean why waste so much money on microsoft office if you can get something like open office which is just as good really .
the good thing for a linux user is that it is growing and growing ( not as strong as apple these days but still ) and it is becoming very popular , i mean look back a couple of years , there was practically nobody around who used linux apart from the occasional it guy

Mali-chan In reply to xylomon [2011-08-18 12:57:02 +0000 UTC]

With Office (and some other programs) it's really ridiculous ... those are professional software designed for big businesses and / or professionals (not mentioning how expensive they are) but some people can't imagine to use anything else even for the most simple tasks. Why? I mostly blame the education system* and for a lesser extent piracy**.

I'm really glad to see the Linux and the Open Source movement grow too. Even if (at least here) it's still mostly the domain of the IT people. I always wanted to try out alternatives, but was dead afraid of Linux / Unix until I got a "Networks and Operating Systems" class in college... Best IT Class Ever! They let us install and try out any OS / program we wanted etc.. Sorry, I got nostalgic.

* They teach the most "well known" programs -> People will mostly know those. Aaaaaand the cycle repeats itself. :/

** As long as an illegal version is easier to find than an alternative most people won't bother.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xylomon In reply to Mali-chan [2011-08-18 13:55:45 +0000 UTC]

no worries , i love nostalgia

yes that is right and because freeware and shareware isn't really marketed you might not know about it also , i mean almost everyone has at least a laptop or netbook these days but most of them don't really know anything about their os and what it can do and therefor stick to what they see and hear about instead of just looking for themselfs

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mali-chan In reply to xylomon [2011-08-18 14:24:20 +0000 UTC]

Yes. This is why I think the education methods should change. People tend stick to what they know. The more they know the more choices they have. Who would market freeware / shareware / etc.? Microsoft (and big companies in general) have money and other assets for this, why does education give them even more unfair advantages for free? (As far as I know it...) The mind boggles.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xylomon In reply to Mali-chan [2011-08-18 16:36:25 +0000 UTC]

yeah , it should , drastically even , don't even get me started on the school system in germany , it is just decades behind in my opinion , they even introduced a spelling reform a couple of years back and recently changed it again , i mean what is that supposed to be ? first you teach a child how to write a word like delphin , then you say : you know what that ph isn't really working for me let's change it to just f and spell it delfin and after a while you go and change it back to ph and that is just one small example

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mali-chan In reply to xylomon [2011-08-18 16:49:44 +0000 UTC]

That German spelling reform is the main problem (massive insecurity) with writing in that language... It's not fair. :/

Hungarian schools... the only thing consistent is that every government feels the need to mess with it. And more and more children leave elementary schools as illiterate / mathematically challenged (Like they have problems with basic multiplication and division) / etc.. :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xylomon In reply to Mali-chan [2011-08-18 17:13:43 +0000 UTC]

that is so true , the spelling reform over here was one huge misstep

but it is not only that , there are a lot of children who are getting left behind especially children from imigrants that don't speak german that well but that is no reason at all to send them of to a special needs school if all they need is just a bit more attention

people just have to realize that a lot has to change , they did it in sweden and it worked perfectly but as long as we hold on to those outdated standards nothing will change

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mali-chan In reply to xylomon [2011-08-18 17:27:23 +0000 UTC]

This thing happens here with the children of the Roma (Gypsy) minority. BUT they aren't recent arrivals, so I don't know why. Actually I do. They don't value education because they don't see a way out of their current lifestyle (mostly the slums) or some don't even want to get out... because they think it's too much effort. The prevailing prejudice against them doesn't help. But such behavior bread prejudice and prejudice such a reaction and I don't see any way out of the cycle. It's depressing. And the governmental "help" (give them more money and privileges!) just makes the whole thing WORSE!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xylomon In reply to Mali-chan [2011-08-18 17:46:22 +0000 UTC]

yeah , we have roma in germany as well even for generations but non of them really hold a german passport ,their just here on some sort of residence permit which does not allow them to work but in germany you can only get a permanent residency if you can proof that you have a regular job

the conclusion : no job without a permit , no permit without a job
and that is why most of them rely on welfare and other form of income

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mali-chan In reply to xylomon [2011-08-18 17:58:01 +0000 UTC]

- other form of income -> Petty crime?

If yes. They do that here too. Here they could get a job but most people won't hire them because of their "petty criminal" status. Which again leads too... Yeah. Cycles you have to love them. :/ To make things worse their minority status can be abused to scream discrimination if they get caught... you can imagine what kinda bias THIS leads to. Our government isn't good in helping. :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xylomon In reply to Mali-chan [2011-08-18 18:08:00 +0000 UTC]

some do petty crime but some also collect trash and earn some extra money that way .
yeah , you don't have to tell me about that , i live in germany after all and if you say something here you get to hear the n word thrown in your face , you just have to look at the demonstrations over in greece , and all germany and france are trying to do is help

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mali-chan In reply to xylomon [2011-08-18 18:34:15 +0000 UTC]

Collecting trash? Recyclable? Like thrash metal and such? You can't imagine how close that is to petty crime here. (Who cares if that piece metal is from the trash, from a construction site, from the cemetery, from a statue from a public park, from the railway or the electrical network ... is it dangerous and annoying and destructive? It is. :/)

Not to mention the days when you can bring out bigger pieces of thrash and stuff you don't need anymore... they literally seize the site. I'm poor too, it would be nice to pick up some stuff such occasions. Good luck, even that I'm not interested in selling (so the stuff they want). :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xylomon In reply to Mali-chan [2011-08-18 20:07:41 +0000 UTC]

yes , recycable , mostly metal , some even started to cut the railways in the east of germany because it is very lucrative right now with the metal prices so high

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mali-chan In reply to xylomon [2011-08-19 05:03:24 +0000 UTC]

I thought so. :/

I know too much of such things. My mother worked in the recycling industry (read: she managed a scrapyard). These kind of petty thieves and less moral people who made deals with them forced her out of business. She kinda resents this. 20 years of experience was worth only this much.

Mali-chan In reply to xylomon [2011-08-19 17:10:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Sometimes. But I can't leave ... I like my country* I have family and friends** here and so on. I don't think I could make it.

* I even want to work for its better future... Now I sound like utterly sentimental national propaganda even if I'm NOT at all fond of the political right (AN UNDERSTATEMENT). Odd.

i know what you mean , after all , home is home no matter where it is ( a shame some people can't seem to understand this )

wanting to work for a better future for you and your fellow people is a very admirable thing if more people would want to do that we wouldn't have so many problems

Mali-chan In reply to xylomon [2011-08-19 18:04:05 +0000 UTC]

I normally consider myself misanthropic but somehow fail to be one the same time. I tend to be painfully aware of human failings*... and how those happen to me too. Humans (or any subcategory of it) are flawed, selfish and ignorant. But two of those can be fought and (the middle) one is not necessary a bad thing. I believe in the potential in all of us.

Sorry. I didn't want to bore you.

* and philosophies that cater to those
