I also tried but I left and now I use another technic to have a large dynamic range ( more simple )with only one picture...

Generally I start with 3-4-5 images with different exposures (often from the same picture) then I use Photomatix for the HDR effect.
May I ask you what kind of technique do you use?

the result is a mix ,between
"dragan" effect and HDR using only one picture ...and really easy for me .
with photoshop :
1-clear/dark shades looking for large contrasts .
2-force contrast only ( not colours )with "Lab" mode...(another way , stronger , with " calques " impossible to explain in english for me )
