DualShock 4 is the new version of the controller from the DualShock family, compatible with PlayStation 4 and partially with PlayStation 3. The controller is equipped with a touchpad, gyroscope, accelerometer, vibration feature, backlight, mono-speaker, micro-USB port, headphone jack, expansion port, and a Share button, allowing for quick sharing of gameplay recordings and screenshots on the Internet. The ability to share images and videos online may be restricted or prohibited by developers for each individual game.

The ability to use different colors for the backlight allows players, according to the company, to more clearly identify themselves, and in games, if developers deem it necessary, it can be used as additional indicators. For example, in Killzone: Shadow Fall, the color of the indicator shows the main character's health status.

The backlight color in DualShock 4 cannot be turned off. This feature is associated with the fact that the controller was designed with the anticipation that Sony would eventually release the PlayStation VR virtual reality headset, which would use this indicator for spatial orientation.

DualShock 4 was designed with the expectation that the controller would be used very often in FPS games, as there were many complaints from players about DualShock 3 not being suitable for games of this genre. At some point, Sony even planned to add biosensors to DualShock 4 (a patent application was even filed for a biometric controller), but this idea was abandoned at the final stage of design.

Before the firmware update in July 2014, DualShock 4 could only be used with PlayStation 3 via a wired connection. Starting from July 2014, the controller works with the previous-generation console without wires, but vibration and motion tracking of the controller are not supported. Currently, it is possible to connect the controller to a PC both via a wired connection using a USB cable and wirelessly using a Bluetooth adapter (both third-party and official from Sony). Vibration and backlight adjustment support are present—color and brightness. Full controller customization is done in Big Picture mode on Steam or the DS4Windows program. The presence of motion tracking is yet to be determined.
