Description QUESTION! BEFORE YOU READ ANY FURTHER!... I was thinking, when you see this painting, at first glance... what do you think/feel? Does it look like a happy, festival-ish, magical (christmas card... gack!) pic? Or does it seem dark, depressing? I would really love to know.

Third one of the series. The Goddess of Music - Quintessence.

Time: 4 days (I guess this is the fastest I go... *sigh*)
Medium: Gouache on Wasli

Quintessence was the daughter of Luna and Sol, the goddess of darkness and the god of light, and from birth she displayed extrodinary talents in the elements (and so earning her name), becoming the youngest of the sages. Yet soon she was able to combine all the 6 elements into one and bring it forth in her song, so creating the final element - Music. With her song she could heal or take life, prophesize or tell tales of the past, and soon she joined her parents in the creation of the spirits. Some say when she sang, the very angels descended, and upon them she cast the bodies of her Spirits.

Quintessence is also known as Philospher's Mercury to alchemists, being the very embodiment of the legendary philospher's stone.

(random side story which is totally irrelevant to the painting : Tir was madly in love with Quintessence's beauty and desired to posses her. And so he tried everything in the world to charm her (so desperate was his situation Veniti even made his brother floating shoes). However, he was sadly very badly rejected since Quintessence would not be seen with a man 1 inch shorter than her.)

Okie... now this painting too is a bit disappointing. She for some reason is reeeaaally reminding me of Furiae from Drakengard. And she doesn't look like the prettiest girl in the world!

(random note 3: Quintessence's spell circle says 'Now in the crystal coffin the reign of death has begun')

These pics are fantastic! I certainly don't have those kind of supplies to work with. I think she is feeling joyful in the act. It's the robes that do it.

Aw thanks a lot! the supplies are actually rare and not rare at the same time. The paper, the paints and the finest brush for the lines is something that you actually have to make yourself, so.... if one knows how, they're available everywhere in the world!

Hmmm...first impression....well, with the bright colorful character in the center contrasting with the dark surroundings, it has that sort of "light in the darkness" kind of feel....hopeful, I guess, without being particularly festive or anything like that. Kind of a solemn version of the emotion. Although granted, there's that seems particularly evil about the surroundings or anything like that...just like natural shadow/darkness...nothing bad about it.
I really love the spirit forms - they look all transparent and such.
And I love her robe too - really elaborate and colorful...really makes her look like some powerful goddess. ^__^

I feel grandoise when I look at this picture. So much motion. Elegent. The winged creatures around her to seem to be summed by her dance or have been brought there by curiousity.

Really?! I felt it seemed kind of static actually. I kind of felt that through the opaque proper-ness of the folds and all... somehow... I relate movement with a kind of blurry motion? ... er, if that makes any sense...

Another masterpiece! At first glance, it looked to me somewhat joyous, with a magical air to it. Maybe it's the expression on her face. But after reading your description, I'd say it feels slightly christmassy as well. XDD

Lovely use of line and colours, such movement!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE all your art, yay!

Oh gack! Christmas-y?! But I guess in one way... that's not so bad either, since it was a kind of a celebration on her part (even though for some others might not have been so nice!)

Somehow... I wasn't very satisfied with the choice of colors with this one. maybe it was just because I hardly ever use red? (atleast in the background!)

tenko72 [2006-02-24 17:36:49 +0000 UTC]

When I look at this, I think of a festival. I like the bright colors of her and how the contrast with her dismal surroundings. Actually, the background on this reminds me of the Nisan Cathedral from Xenogears, which is kind of weird. I don't know if that was intended. I really like Quintessance's outfit and how it moves with her like that.

Yakra In reply to tenko72 [2006-03-01 08:32:31 +0000 UTC]

Actually, when I just drew this, the Luna-Sol statues at the back did remind a lot of those from Nisan Cathederal. Even more so, because of the anima-animus themes in Xenogears and stuffies about incomplete halves!

Em... it wasn't intended at all. Infact when I noticed that, I tried to even change it around. (added the almost invisible pedestals underneath the two statues) Though I guess... it still looks like that.

Hrm... I think anything to do with the anima and animus reminds me of Xenogears.

merriya [2006-02-23 15:57:48 +0000 UTC]

This reminded me a lot of tarot cards(Well duuuh marria XD ). That's the first impression. It also has that romantic element... NO, 'not Romeo and Juliet' romantic the 'William Blake' Romantic, as in the Eighteenth century movement? Its also very hypnotic, the movement of her robes, her expression, its almost as if she's literally pulling you into her world, yet you might not be to sure about going there because what may seem like a beautiful face is a mask (le gasp) that covers the hidden motives a of a wise and ancient beings hidden motives (zomg! long sentence!). I could yak more but we had a jury today and Mr Q ate my brain(again?)

It's an eerily beautiful painting. As others have stated 'Mysterious and magical' would describe it best... I love mysterious and magical . Don't worry, Quintessence is beautiful! I really love the background too! The colors compliemnt each other very well... and the pretty flowy lines ofcourse! Her robes .

Goodness, and I'm also very impressed by the myhtology you've come up with. I can't even handle a decent plotline Haha, with the way the I really wasn't expecting Tir to be rejected because of his height*pats*. That's a very amusing twist... A shortie God! ... and I thought a shortie super destructive sorcerer was cool

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Yakra In reply to merriya [2006-02-24 11:03:57 +0000 UTC]

Ah! How we all used to wish we had juries too! (even if it had been Mr Q sprouting off nonsense). I don't think I had a proper jury even in the end ('can you make lul-luc sketches for us pleaase?').

Aaand... you're also one of the closest to actually figuring out the pic! I'm happy! Somehow, I felt everyone (well I still expect majority to go 'wats dis pretty gril?'[that is... peopie who'll see this in real]) would find it a happy piccy of a pretty little girl.

Ah well...! You've analysed it so much you've actually made me feel I've actually made something biggie! *gets big head!*

(If there can be an ugly god, then there can be an overly concious shortie god!)

(Who's the shortie sorcerer? Azraq? )

merriya In reply to Yakra [2006-02-24 12:25:42 +0000 UTC]

Whee, I'm smart ! (I just need to reread my comments before posting ) I have to admit I would be totally lost without a 'good' Jury. Once my unneeded 'analysis' of a pretty flowery wrapping paper discouraged my mom from buying it..so

Yes the shortie sorcerer be Azraq *pats Azraq*. Ooh, there's an ugly god too.. Yay! Seems like this pantheon has a lot of character, not just pretty, perfect and powerful people! yay!

And yes you have made something biggie... even though its a mini..erm..yeah!

Yakra In reply to merriya [2006-02-25 06:00:50 +0000 UTC]

Heh heh... my juries usually used to end in teh juror falling asleep. To make things worse, I was usually the first, so I set him/her in a grumpy sleepy mood too! XD ( *yips about the history of Isil*)

You really are good with words so make use of it! (Bleh... you painting people are always good with words!) The worlds needs less flowery wrapping papers anyways!

Hem... I don't think I really have some full sorcerers in meh stories...!

*thinks.... Lesrak? Luc? Gaius? Wai! No one?*

Well... I thought the usual! Very magical and mystical! O_O but.. maybe a hint of darkness...but more like a mood of the nocturnal~!
like..the mystical and magical spirits of the night~-^
And definatey noticed well..astrology stuff! Such as the moon and the sun(or just a star?) hanging from the top! and the very cool looking crecent in the centered background! Plus the tile son the ground also draw me toward a mystical/astrology type feel^^
and ooooooooooh the girl is so pretty~! The red dress makes her seem kinda devious and seductive type...yet the white and blueish robes add the mystical and magic feeling to her! ^^

I love those angels in the background too...and the transparant figures on the side! O_O

Gosh I love how you bring so much magic and elements together XD

You always do such a great job~! ^_______^ Keep on going and never doubt your own work, I'm always loving itXD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Yakra In reply to EvilTelephone [2006-02-24 10:41:31 +0000 UTC]

Heh heh... the moon and the stars are actually the symbols of Luna and Sol, dark and light. And when you combine both, you get the perfect being - Quintessence! XD The rest of the tiles (which can be seen) bear the symbols of the four elements - water, earth, wind, fire.

(Basically my random silly explaination insertion in a painting.. *ahem*)

Thanks a lot though! I'm kind of glad though the magical mood is clear. The little flowers I added in the spell effects started to remind me of a christmas card.

Very mysterious! Is that an outline of a bird right above the wing? I love the clothes. To me it almost seems like a dark eerieness is filling the room but hope is evident. The bird and the bright colors of the girls outfit symbolizing the hope. But then you bring contrast with the blood red dress. Lovely job!

Personally, I get a feeling of mystery mostly. It's not precisely happy, but its not at all depressing or dark. It's mystical and mysterious and... I think someone said serene. That's a good word for it too. Definitely magically in any case. And definitely beautiful.

Yakra In reply to YummieYami [2006-03-01 08:55:23 +0000 UTC]

Hey! That's kind of accurate! It's neither happy, nor depressing. It's magical which was good and bad for all. I was sort of aiming to capture how all things are born and the moment they are, their downfall begins as well?

W-wow O_O hmm before reading the description..how to describe.. mystical, magical, dark but doesn`t make me have any dark feelings more like makes me curious. The dark background goes well with her light clothes ..nice contrast ^_^
Her pose and the two figures next to her as well as the circle on the ground just scream "MAGICAL!!!" so..yes if I have to describe it..its magical ^^
Hehe I could understand Tir falling in love with her..she is pretty and has that mischievous expression ~

Yakra In reply to Exarrdian [2006-02-24 10:27:42 +0000 UTC]

Welp... I guess I was thinking of magical... since it all did happen in teh age of Great Magic and all. But I guess I was also kind of thinking of dark in a slightly negative way (since she was born in the time people started worshipping them as gods). Well not reaallly negative... *ish confused herself?* Ah well! I'm happy with your deduction! ^.^

ummm...without reading further, here's my first associations:
Dark? Yes, a bit. Not necessarily in a bad way though, because the girl is smiling. So she's either a goddess of death or something... or it's not really that dark in a negative manner. The darkness here seems more like reclusion I guess. Like she's dancing for a certain ritual, but has to be completely alone for it to somehow gain maximum effect of the spell she's dancing... er. Or something like that.

hmmm... *reads the description* was that accurate? XD;

"he was sadly very badly rejected since Quintessence would not be seen with a man 1 inch shorter than her"
lol! poor guy! XD *is reminded of Aurelio* gah, haven't commented on the Tir one yet x_x

gee, your characters and scenes are so beautifully designed... and even more so the mythology you're creating behind it. It really seems like reading a real mythology and you show just as much attention to detail as in your pic. It's amazing

Yakra In reply to ScatterbrainFox [2006-02-23 11:10:52 +0000 UTC]

Somehow That silly expression of her's was the hardest to make! I couldn't decide whether I wanted her happy or sad or what (and her mouth had to stay open all the time! >.< Silly singer!)

So I'm not even sure if I wanted her happy.

But hey! You're the closest to catching on to the mood I wanted to convey!

Mweh heh heh... poor Aurelio! XD *intoduces Tir to Aurelio - its not the end of the world! other people are short too!* Short-ness causing problems in one's love life seems to be a common problem! XD Meh stories are hardly anything special though. They're quite the silly ramblings of the mind. (Now yours though...! I loved Aurelio's story. ^.^)

yaaaay, I got it I gooot it

uh....singing people are hard to draw, yeah. That's why I never drew something like this (and... I have a bard character. Shame on me.). Open mouthes are hard enough to draw, but smiling and singing and all @_@ I've been practicing drawing realistic mouthes and to me they actually looked good! So maybe that helps to be able to simplify that realistic style again and get a simplified mouth that is open, smiling and singing xD

gah, Aurelio's story is just on clichΓ© stapled onto the next!
