Description Hello everyone,

How are you? are you doing well? I sure hope that you are! Well...where to begin....? To put it simply, here's my newest drawing; and I must say that I rather like how this one came out overall! If you can all forgive me for saying so, that is... I have here my dearest of all creations, my rendition of my reinvented girl Teana.

To give credit, where credit is due, I originally took the name Teana from the "Yu-Gi-Oh: Forbidden Memories," video game for the Playstation. There was a supposed storyline involving Yami Yugi's past in Ancient Egypt (one that was nothing like the manga version, mind you!) that I'm unfamiliar with, given that I was not able to get through most of the game. However there was a character named Teana who looked *exactly* like the modern day Anzu/Tea. For the sake of my own writing, however, I borrowed the name of Teana and completely changed her character design to my own liking; and thus my version of Teana was born.

Though it's true that I've drawn her several times in the past and for a number of years now, I believe that this depiction is the closest to how I've imagine her in my mind. Over the years she's evolved a great deal, both visually and in my written works as well. What's strange is that she originally began as simply a past life version of Tea Gardener or Anzu Masaki and though she still shares that link with the canon Yu-Gi-Oh character, little by little, she continued to grow and change as time passed.....

Truth be told, she eventually began to show hints of "Mary Sue-esque" qualities too (I won't lie about that.... )! And yet.....and I mean this with sincere honesty, I think when even more time passed, Teana overcame even those qualities that she shared with me! Today, I truly do not believe that her feelings and reactions are like that of my own; at least for the most part. In fact when writing her character, I often find that she behaves in a fashion that is *completely* different to the way that I would, in a similar situation! To me, though it may have taken many years for this progression to occur, I believe that she finally became a fully formed character in her own right.

When looking back at when I first created her in my written works, I found that I would often struggle with her depiction, as I couldn't quite find her "voice." I often criticized her myself even, sometimes going as far as saying that she was overly emotional or weak; wondering what Yami Yugi/Atemu/Atem would come to see in a character like her as romantic interest. (I'm being *painfully* honest here.....). But even so...somehow, in a way that was beyond my complete understanding, she was still very precious to me, even when I put her and my writing away in 2005....

In late 2009 however, I was reintroduced to my love for Yu-Gi-Oh and even my fan-fiction as a whole. When revisiting all of these things, I think I finally understood (at least in part) what I hadn't been able to in the past. It's like I could really *see* Teana, when I couldn't completely see or understand her previously! She had a new inner strength that she hadn't possessed before! She had a more intuitive nature to her, that allowed her to feel strongly for others! And she was so full of undying love, boundless hope and unwavering faith..... Perhaps it would be these qualities that could potentially win the Pharaoh's heart; a genuine nature to her that he hadn't encountered anywhere else before! These were the things that I could see in her now, and what I hoped to portray in my written works as well.

Perhaps some of that is due to me growing and changing as a person too, but when it comes to this character, I discovered, especially in the last year or so how much I really did love and cherish her..... I think its because of this new re-imagining of her that I've insisted on re-writing my previous chapters before continuing on with my fan-fiction, "Transcending Memories: A Bond Unsealed:

[link]

More than anything else, I wanted to *accurately* portray my Teana and tell her story. To be honest yet again, I still don't know if I'm even remotely skilled enough of a writer to do that.... But I certainly want to try! And that goes for my visual depiction of her as well!

Though her overall design has remained unchanged over the years, I think slowly she has grown more and more mature as time passed. I also found that her hair seems to grow longer as well; though oddly enough that's never a conscious decision on my part!

And though I dislike using this example given that I'm not overly fond of the character, (namely, Kikyo that is!) I often compare her link with Tea to the relationship between Kikyo and Kagome of Inuyasha. The two may share the same soul, and have visual similarities (so much so that many confuse the two) but they also have distinct characteristics too. I like to believe that that's true of my Teana in comparison to the real Tea/Anzu.

In the image I also have her holding a Lily, which will have special significance for her and her relationship with Yami, in the past. I suppose I'll save that for the final version of this image, which may even be an ID for this character; accounting her personal history and background.

Well everyone, I suppose I've said quite enough already. I apologize if anything that I've said makes me sound egotistical or arrogant or anything at all along those lines! That is most *certainly* not my intention at all! But the truth is, I really do love this character, much like a parent loves a child, perhaps. Maybe that's a bit strange or even severely questionable to many.... But that is how I feel. Thank you very very much for looking and I thank you if you've read this far as well! It truly *truly* means the world to me. Take care everyone!

Love,

Really beautiful sketch of her.

Your description is very heartfelt, you can tell what a long journey you've been on with this character and how much she means to you. The pose seems to reflect this about her, the way she's holding the flower seems so sincere and almost a little nervous.

Thank you my friend I'm truly truly honored by your compliments to my dear Teana girl! Thank you so much! It's wonderful that you also understand how I feel about my character and that you feel that way about yours too! Gosh! There's just so much love for these characters, as if they really did have a life and energy of their own! And I agree about holding on to that love for as long as possible! It's that feeling that allows you, as the artist, to create great things; really soulful images, you know? I'll certainly do my best and I hope you continue with your incredible work too!! Remember what you said also! Keep the love and don't let anyone take it away from you! Don't lose to the pressure around you that hinders that love! It's yours and yours alone! Never lose it! Take care girl and keep in touch!

First off, awesome pic! She has seemed to evolved from previous sketches I've seen. It's nice to see your hard work on character creation pay off! I remember you saying back in high school (now I'm dating how long we've known each other>_<) that you had a tough time coming up with characters that weren't necessarily based on something. So, I'm really happy to see you breaking the mold and experimenting with it! It's so rewarding to finally come up with a character design that works well!

Secondly, I totally understand how difficult it is creating a character from scratch, personality and all. Even though your character is partially canon based, she's still her own person without necessarily needing to rely on the archetypes of the character that the canon was based upon. I know my character, Suke, took a looooong time to come into his current form. And he's still growing. He'll prolly continue to grow until I'm done writing this book! (the neverending process that it is!) So, I can understand your frustrations trying to get on paper what's in your head! I come across that stumbling block almost every time I put pen to paper!

So, in all, congrats to you, and I hope that your inspiration will keep up so that you can tell your story as you see it in your mind's eye!! Keep at it, and good things will come!!

-Suke

It does take a while sometimes to truly understand a character in and out. For my Pokemon OC, it took me about year of role playing with her to truly understand and build the character to what she is now. I think at one point we've all created a "mary-sue" character (whatever a persons opinion of that may be), but all we can do is keep building and practicing. Whether that be with the same character or different ones. When I write my YGO OCs I still have a bit of trouble truly putting who they are into words, partially because they are still "newly born", also because I haven't gotten to the events that truly express who they are in comparison to the canons.

I can understand the comparison to Kikyo and Kagome from InuYasha, and honestly I to kind of have that scenerio in my own story. (Although it's slightly different if we get into all the little details of the two characters). And creating a character that is so closely related to a canon can be difficult due to the fact you'd want to make sure to have a good balance. It seems you've done that very nicely with Teana, and I enjoyed reading your authors notes on your progression with your OC ^-^

Aw.... Thank you so much! I'm truly *truly* flattered by what you've written above! It's wonderful to know that others feel similarly to how I do in regards to this character and that they've felt that way about their own creations too. What you wrote is so true! And very insightful also! You've managed to explain it much more eloquently than I did even! You're absolutely right though! I think art in its truest, purest form is when you can truly express yourself, your feelings and in this case even beyond your own feelings, to create something that has a life of its own. It can be difficult though, and even draining in its way....

To be *really* honest, sometimes I feel that it's a bit silly investing so much time, energy and even so much heart into something like this. But then when I think about how much I really and truly love these works and this character especially, that just seems to win out in the end, somehow.....

I'll probably continue struggling with it all but hey, I want to keep going and see where it takes me. Thank you once more for all of your incredibly kind words.... Your compliments to Teana and even commenting on my comparisons to Inuyasha.... It really made my day and does mean the world to me! You're very sweet! I wish you the very best of luck with your own creations as well! Once more I thank you! Feel free to stop by anytime, ok? ^_^ Take care!

Oh of course ^-^

It is a struggle some days, and especially with me going through college for art related stuff stress has made me question why on earth I love this so much. But when I create a piece of art or writing with creations of my own that are truly close to my heart it really makes me hold onto my love for the different forms of arts. And even seeing others have the same passion for their own art, writing, characters is very nice to see.
