Hello everyone! ^_^

How are you? Are you doing well? I sure hope that you are! Well, it took me a REALLY long time, but I finally finished this piece! Hooray!

Painted by hand using opague water color paints, this is my rendition of my favorite couples from the Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney video game series for the Nintendo DS. I mentioned this work in progress briefly in the sketch that I posted a few weeks ago:

But given that I didn't want to reveal too many spoilers then, and also given that I had a LOT to say about this image, I thought that I'd wait for the finished version to delve deeper into my thought process in regards to the work. So read below *only* if you don't mind spoilers for the game all right?

For those who are familar with the game series, I have depicted here, Phoenix Wright, and Iris; as well as Godot (aka Diego Armando) with Mia Fey. The stories of these characters are revealed in detail throughout the first three games, but the story within the story was finally told in the 3rd game, Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations. In short, though Phoenix Wright is the main character (who is also a defense attorney that the player controls throughout the 3 games), we learn that he is not only mentored by the seasoned attorney Mia Fey, but that the two had crossed paths once before, years prior to the first game.

We also learn that in Mia's younger days, she was involved with yet another defense attorney named Diego Armando, who was thought to have been poisoned to death. The culprit was Dahlia Hawthorne, who was supposedly dating Phoenix Wright in their college days. Eventually her guilt for a number of crimes was revealed, but even so, Phoenix, who cared for his "Dolly" dearly, refused to believe that she could perform such heinous acts..... It was not until the end of the game, that we learned that Dahlia had a twin sister named Iris, and it was she that had dated Phoenix and that she also reciprocated his feelings....

An even more elaborate twist is that both Iris and Dahlia were cousins to Mia Fey, who came from a long line of spirit mediums, which is a recurring theme throughout all 3 of the games. And finally, we also learn that despite the poisoning, Diego Armando survived his brush with death, yet had been hosptalized for several years. Only when he regained consciousness, did he learn that his beloved Mia had been killed..... Given that Phoenix was closest to her, he blamed him for her death and became a Prosecutor to face him in court.

In a nutshell, those were the tragic events that transpired between these characters, but even so, I believed that their affections for each other were genuine, making their separations even more sorrowful. Even Iris, who did have strong feelings for Phoenix, ultimately went to jail for her involvement with a number of cases related to her twin as well as one that occured later. Perhaps it wasn't a long sentence, but it is unknown if she ever had the chance to reunite with Phoenix again..... Given that a follow up game, Apollo Justice was created, that took place 7 years afterwards, unfortuantly, it seems quite unlikely....

Within my image, I decided to create a nice, pleasant shot of what could have been, if things hadn't occured the way that they did within the story. I imagined a fun, joyous outing among the four of them, possibly a double date, which was captured in a photograph tacked on a post-it cork board. Given that this scene could never have happened, I choose to use a limited palette of paints, mainly browns and reds, to give it a sepia tone or an aged/faded look to it; to differeniate from true reality. I also wanted to add a texture, as well as some flowers and shrubbery in the background. Given that the final case of the game took place in a cold, snowy environment, I thought that the springtime elements could also contrast to the bleakness of the characters' fates.

Ironically, the sketch for this piece was started more than 2 years ago, when I had just finished playing the 3rd game that mentioned many of the events above!! The sketch sat unfinished for all that time, until I finally completed it a few weeks prior. But even then, when I was originally coming up with the concept, I recall that I had asked my younger brother Alex, who is also a fan of the game series, about his impression of my work. He commented specifically on Godot's playful "bunny ears" that he's giving Phoenix. My thoughts were that given that Godot seemed to enjoy "messing" with Phoenix throughout their many opposing trials in the game, that I would show this perceived playfulness in Godot's antic within this work. However, Alex argued, convincingly, that Godot never meant to be playful throughout the true game; that instead he was lashing out because of his anger and bitterness over what happened to both himself and his deceased love, Mia. I had to admit that his reasonings seemed rather sound, which is why I decided to go for a "What If" sort of theme, as stated previously. Perhaps if things HAD ended happily, maybe then Godot would have been more playful towards Phoenix as in this image.

However, if I am going for a "What could have been" sort of theme, some could argue that Godot or rather Diego (his true name) would also never have been poisoned. And so, this would mean that he would never need the contraption over his eyes, or even the white hair, which were unfortunate side affects due to whatever he drank; which took a seriously toll on his body. But truth be told, I simply wanted to draw him that way, since I rather liked the vizer and the white hair, as opposed to when he had black hair and had no need of a device to aid his vision.

And though Mia probably never met Iris, (as opposed to her vicious clashings with Dahlia in court), I also believe that if things had been different, perhaps these two could have gotten along, like true family members; which is yet another tragedy within the game. In a nutshell though, those are my reasons for creating this work the way that I did. It may have taken quite a long time, but I hope that the final result was well worth it!
