HDR might've helped with the extremes in light and dark. (But that can be overdone so easily.)

I like this one!

I actually preferred the mood of the original. Because it was a bit more brooding with promise of what the light would reveal.

It looks like you've kicked down the contrast, which is taking away the shaping of your clouds and by adjusting the brightness, now the house seems surreal (and a bit hot) as opposed to catching the morning sun.

Perhaps (and I'm no photoshop guy) you could just highlight the tops of the folds in the field in PS to give you the right effect? You can see in this adjusted image where they would most likely be. What about overlaying this image on the original with the house cropped out at say 20% opacity. Would that give the desired effect?

I still think the composition is really good.

It's tough. I'm not a photoshop kind of guy. I prefer to compose in the camera and shoot RAW. Then it's just like using a digital negative (so to speak) and I can tweak my results, much like I used to in my darkroom.

It's my experience that we all run home to momma in respects to how we solve problems. This not a comment on you but a comment on myself. Because I started out in physical film (shooting, developing, etc.) I tend to approach the problem from the camera and composition side first. I like to shoot my landscapes on a tripod with a remote, low ISO and relative shutter speed. In other words, after the shot is composed, I try to take my shaky self out of the picture.

A lot of people who are more PS savvy will be able to take an image further in post, obviously HDR requires a lot of post work, so it sort of stands alone. But I think the concept of, "I'll fix it in post," is incorrect. If you don't start off with the best initial image it's an uphill battle all of the way.

The bottom line here (at least to me) is you took this image under circumstances which were not the best. If you look, that initial image is still the best representation of that moment, flaws and all, it is as far as you can go. I still like it, it's a good capture. All of the subsequent manipulation only reveals the flaws in the original image, which makes further manipulation a losing game.

To me, art is not in it's perfection of execution but in the imperfection that creep in with the world's natural chaos. When I shoot long exposure in tangled under growth, I like how the roots are crisp and the leaves above blur because of the wind, it adds motion to an otherwise static shot.

I think the solution to this problem is to go back to the scene of the crime (at 7:00am), set up your camera on a tripod and wait for the light and have another go.

It might be nicer in Spring (grin). I actually do a lot of black and white work in Winter because it's so monochromatic anyway. Though I won't be able to lift my camera for another six weeks (recovering from shoulder surgery).
