Gary and Mary both die
After Gary dies you go to his corpse, get the lighter, and use it to kill Mary.
then you get the ending.

I think I got the ending but never saw the painting of Gary. Was it a cutscene or just something you have to look for yourself.

It's a cut scene you see when you are about to go downstairs after coming back from the world of Guertena. His painting actually replaces the hanged man painting; The painting Gary was looking at in the beginning.
