Maybe a silly question -- when you use the crossed out areas to mark the spotted blacks, how do you know it's going to all work compositionally and not end up being too much black or be unclear in some way? Do you actually shade it in at the layout stage and then just outline it in the final pencils?

I usually have a rough thumbnail with these black already spotted
