This has to be the best challenge coin I have ever seen. I lost four friends in Iraq and have a tattoo that is similar. Thanks for doing this for the families.

Thank you and thank you for your service! It's the least I can do. I'm sorry for the loss of your friends. It's sad to say, they may be the lucky ones in all this, when I see the horrific wounds and burns that the survivors have and the countless operations they have to endure as well as the physical therapy and then they the indifference they get from the VA system and our own government, it makes me sick. Things have improved, but in my opinion, our wounded Veterans should want for nothing in terms of care, housing, education and support, we owe them a debt of gratitude, but thanks and a pat on the back only goes so far. Be safe.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. They are not for sale, we are only giving them to the families of the fallen, but I might have a sample one at home that I could give you. I'll check and if I have one, you can send me a small padded self addressed and stamped envelope, it might cost a buck to send. I'll try to look tonight when I get home from work.

Thanks! Sorry for the late reply. I really appreciate your comments. I wanted something that put it all into perspective. We always hear football players being called heroes, they aren't, we hear them use term that make a game sound like battle, it's not. This coin was designed for real blood and guts heroes.
Thanks again!

Thanks Einion! TSgt. Vargas and I came up with the concept after reading all the sad stories of these young guys getting killed over there and we wanted to do something that might help ease the pain for their families. He has been sending out these coins to families when ever he is able to come up with addresses to send them to. -YD

ive left this on my watch until i could give a proper response to this
this is an incredibly touching piece - as another commenter said there is nothing more touching than seeing the gun and helemt of the dead soldier. i think no matter what your view is on whether war is justified (in this situation or others) there is nothing one should do but admire the sacrifice and selflessness of serving professional soldiers - a great piece don
btw what is this coin?

yankeedog In reply to tyhopho [2004-04-20 23:54:29 +0000 UTC]
Thanks Brian! Very well said. Military Challenge coins are used for a variety of purposes. The challenge happens in a club or a bar, a soldier will slam his coin down on the bar, those soldiers unable to match the challenge have to buy a round, but if everybody matches the challenge with their coins, the challenger buys the round! Often officers will have a coin made and issue them to soldiers as a perk for a job well done, these coins might get a soldier out some other unpleasant duty at the officers discretion. the tradition of the challenge coin goes back to WWI. TSgt. Daniel Vargas and I designed this coin after discussing the loss of a soldier from Texas, we decided to do a coin to recognize his and others sacrifice. TSgt. Vargas has been sending coins out to the families of men and women who paid the ultimate price. Thanks again for the kind words, it is much appreciated. -YD
