Description This is another in my series of PRR buildings and stations. Rose Tower was the operations headquarters of Rose Railroad Yard in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Rose Tower was destroyed by fire in 1953. Rose Yard is still in operation. Maybe some of our rail fans can give us some details on Rose Yard.

Some of the others illustrations from this series are New Kensington Station, Wilks Barre Station and Penn Station.

Thanks! I'm guessing about 12 hours over 4 days, I did it in sections, background, train and trolley, Rose Tower and foreground. It was a lot of work, but when you break it down into smaller pieces, it's not so bad. The building too the most time, but there is a lot of repetition in it with all the windows and roof brackets.

I've been working on a Mac for 10 years. The design studio I work for had 2 computers when I started working there, we still did artwork in the conventional way, marker layouts and paste up production, we only used the computers for making comprehensive layouts and they were agonizingly slow. One day I came into work and my drawing desk was gone and there was this beige box with a 17" monitor and they said "here, learn this". Luckily they also hired a guy to teach us and he did a masterful job teaching all of us until we were able to do just about anything on the Mac. I also credit him for helping me take my traditional skills of drawing, painting, air brush and photo retouching and applying them to the computer.

Ballpark, how long does a piece of art like this one take you? It looks like a lot of work (and I'm sure looks don't deceive) to get something as complex and accurate as your latest stuff.

It varies depending on my amount of motivation. I've learned to break things down into sections and to do a little bit at a time. I'm guessing I had about 12 hours into this over 4 days.

I love the Big Steamer, plus the Trolley to Boot...

Thanks! It is a pretty unique scene. I've been trying to get a photo of a Norfolk Southern train, a CSX train and a Port Authority Light Rail car all in the same shot! There is a spot on the Smithfield Street Bridge in Pittsburgh where I could take it if I had the time and the trains would cooperate.

Cool pic. I love the detail in the background, and the streetcar is cool too...is the bridge that had the streetcar track still intact? And cool how you got the signals.

Thanks! I doubt that much of what is in this illustration is still there. I know Norfolk Southern still uses Rose Yard, but I'm sure it's just a shadow of what it was back in the Pennsy days.

I was reading a story on a web site about the building and how close it was to the tracks. The guy said "Best damned maintained piece of track on the entire Pennsylvania Railroad! Gets inspected EVERY DAY by the Trainmaster himself!" Check it out: [link]

Thanks Ron! I understand that Norfolk Southern has gone into Altoona in a big way, but it's nothing like the glory days of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
