Pastel Portrait for a customer of her dog Kyoto.

Love working with soft pastels since they are so easy to blend colors with to create gradients and contrast.

It's like creating a painting in colors but having sort of the technique of regular graphite pencils to apply the colors with.

The difference is that you work from dark to light to get the more realistic effect since the shadows/darker areas are always underneath and lighter areas are on top since they catch the light.

If you do it the other way like you most of the time do with graphite/charcoal, it will make the painting look flat & not "3D".

But I'm definitely looking forward to be creating more artwork using pastels.

DON'T FORGET to spray the painting with fixative when you are finished, otherwise the pastels are going to smudge when you frame the painting.
