This drawing is from Nathaniel Hawthorn's The Scarlet Letter. The quote that so caught me up in Hester Pryne's story was this:

"...so picturesque in her attire and mien, and with the infant at her bosom, an object to remind him of the image of Divine Maternity,...something which should remind him, indeed, but only by contrast, of that sacred image of sinless motherhood, whose infant was to redeem the world" (pg. 42).

The way Hester stands atop a scaffolding and faces the crowd in determination and the way she proudly declares that she will not tell who the father is, and the fact that she stood atop the scaffolding with the noose beside her, and this very quote!, caused me to want to draw this. It inspired me.

The drawing itself took me in strides. I've had it stuck in the cover of my book for the past four weeks as I slowly added detail after detail and MAN was it tiring. I even added a background...and I NEVER do that! I think baby!Pearl was the easiest thing to do, even though I've never drawn a baby in my life. I did practice once, but that was it.

Oh, and man was the 'A' fun to draw!! I did a multitude of designs, and because I'm not good with caligraphy (at all!), it was a trial. And I know the 'A' is supposed to be this gorgeous thing but I couldn't make it detailed enough. Fiddlesticks.

Umm, what else. Oh way, one more thing!

For being so simple, Puritan clothing is HARD to draw for me!! I didn't think it'd be so hard, but I had to go on Google and Ask.com to look up what Puritans or Pilgrims actually wore back then! I knew most of the clothes were dark and simple, but I needed the style. Anyways...that's it.
