Nothing inspires me more than great music. What's even better having ideas emotions to convey through that inspiration.
Michael Jackson was a true inspiration. I know everyone's tired of hearing about him now, but dammit, the man was a gentle soul and good person, and damn good scource of inspiration. "Who Is It" has always been my favorite song, but now that I'm older and like so many others, I realise the true emotion we can get from music. After some years of not hearing this song (my aunt stole my dad's Dangerous CD several years back; I used to play Who Is It and Dangerous over and over), I think it kind of built up in the back of my head.
This is my own tribute to that gentle soul.

That being said, two songs inspired this picture- "Who Is It", and "Human Nature". I don't know why, but I always find myself drawing Nyamka more than my other characters. I think it's perhaps because her story is really something that sticks with me and really brings my own secret pains and feelings through the medium of illustration and writing.
Nyamka is always dehumanized by her master; he insults her womanhood, calls her degrading names, and insults her dead parents, and without hesitation, makes fun of her disadvantaged situation as an orphan. She is no slave, but she, like most other orphans, are treated even worse than slaves, who are allowed to earn their freedom and even marry. When Nyamka was younger, the master would whip her at times in order to instill submissiveness into her. But Nyamka is a strong young woman both physically and mentally. Though she is hit with pangs of loneliness and depression, she is sedulous by nature and is driven by her desire to bring her beloved parents back to life, her love for Lekan, and belief in the will of God.

Nyamka is not a slave to any man. In this piece she is buffeted by an underlying sadness. But she will, in some way, make her destiny come true.
