...as long as you are fair and credit the original artist!!

Every artist once was a beginner, never forget it!
And most artists started with copying: from their favorite Mangakas or artists.
I think copying is one of the best ways to learn and to get a feeling for a certain style, because you observe and you reproduce it.

I recently saw someone who copies drawings from other dA artists. Copying itself not stealing. It's not the same like downloading and re-submitting under their names. No, it's drawn by them.
But when I told that person to credit the original artist, he or she just hid my comment.
That's coward, really. There's nothing wrong about copying, but it's wrong to deny it and to claim it as your own work. Then it's plagiarism and that's stealing! And even worse: making profit with it!

I think if you want to learn by copying, do it in your sketchbooks privately. But if you want to upload it, ask the original artists before if possible and credit them and link to the original piece.

Stay fair!
No one blames you for practicing, but for lying. And honestly, it's a lie to oneself, too.
Thanks for reading!

Edit: Thank you for so many comments! Please understand that I have to keep the replies short due to lack of time!

I only wanted to point out that copying itself isn't bad. Because many people think it's bad, they are afraid to admit it, and see, it's the famous doom loop.
But the more experienced you are, the more you should replace copying by inspiration. Add more own elements and don't stick too much to the original!

please read carefully what i wrote.
and it's my personal opinion only.
IF the owner of the original art says you have to remove it, then you have to. there's no discussion then.

Which Artist are you talking about? I want to talk some sense into him/her because copying without permission and credit is cowardly and uploading and claiming it as your own drawing is stealing.

and in the best case (if it's a community artist) you have their permission to upload it.
some artists do not want their art being copied.

Β When I was younger, I got a machine where you could trace. I copied the pictures out of my Littlest Pet Shop Colouring Book, But My Sister said Copying is mean and cowardly.Β

But to this day, even though she is 4 years older than me, My art is better than hers. She knows it, she even said It once. It is also the reason why she calls me drawings stupid, and critiques everything on my drawing. You can tell a difference between our pieces. One is better than the other.Β
Tracing and copying helps you learn.Β

maybe you studied harder than she did.

yeah, hiding the comment was really bad.

My art teacher is a person who believes copying, not tracing, helps. Every once in a while, she'll ask me to do a free draw, too see how much I've improved, and I found that copying helps ALOT

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cocoaprints In reply to Book-Box [2014-08-04 11:22:48 +0000 UTC]

Your art teacher is one of the few I've heard of doing that and I'm glad she makes you see for yourself how much you've improved.

I, personally, practiced the tracing method from the ages of 3 to 7. Never publicly, just to myself tracing coloring books and the like. I feel it gave me a jumpstart at that age and got me to where I am now.

I am a beginner. It is impossible to do anything without copying references. I need to copy the pose from somewhere, some static elements, etc..

Logically I always give credit to the artist.
I think the first step in learning humans is copying in all fields.

I am passionate about these type of discussions.

Speak it as a market level, is complicated, it may be an imitation, an unauthorized copy. Imitating is legal, there are famous artists who have imidated pictures in your own style

Now, if you imitate the work and the author's signature, you are taking the dark side

i'm no jurist but i think if you copy, do it only privately. so no selling and commercial use.
