Description

Vintage postcard
Divided back, golden age

Circa 1907 - 1915
Illustrated Postal Card Co.

Pouters are domesticated varieties of rock doves with unusual posture and shape. These interesting and somewhat silly looking birds are among the oldest of pigeons breeds. They have been bred in Europe for at least four centuries.

Pouters are among the tallest of pigeons and these slim birds can stand around sixteen inches tall on their very long legs. They carry themselves upright and their crop balloons out in front of them.

Your photo has been featured here:  February Feature - Love for DOVES (and PIGEONS)!Pigeons and doves are intelligent, curious birds that make surprisingly delightful friends. They are quiet, easy to maintain, and very affectionate and playful. They are an excellent choice for the novice bird owner and make a suitable companion bird for older children and teens.

Temperament :icondiamonddoveplz:
-----------------------------------------------
They are generally calm placid birds, but tend to startle easily. They are peaceful gentle birds that are not given to aggression; if frightened or stressed they can bite or scratch.
When raised with love and caring, pigeons and doves are very loyal and affectionate. They enjoy being petted and gently cuddled. They enjoy human contact and are fairly easy to tame and train.

Ah, the namesake of the Edwardian "Pouter pigeon" sillhouette that was so popular!

In the early 1900's and the very end of the 1800's, women's fashion had quite a dramatic change in shape. Women strove for an "S bend" posture with corsets that pushed the chest out and the rear back, and wore blouses/dresses that were VERY full in the front (and added onto with ruffly corset covers and other aids) but cinched tight at the waist. Took the look of a pouter pigeon at its biggest forms, as a result!

That woman in the golf costume from 1907 is amusingly disfigured. . . Imagine her without the clothes!! That neck, eek that waist, ouch

I see the S-bend in the women in the first pic, the women very much emulated the birds whose feathers graced their hats... What a weird society that was. Some of the postcards I have make fun of those giant sized hats I love love love big hats.

Haha, never thought about that. Maybe late Victorians just really wanted to pretend they were birds! XD
