Description Vintage Postage Stamp
USPS Bureau of Engraving & Printing
Date of Issue: 6 June 1974

This is of one a set of postage stamps to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union.

Each of the stamps features the theme of writing and reading letters.  The design of each stamp was taken from paintings done by international artists.

This one is by Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760-1849)

Philately is the study of stamps and postal history and other related items. It also refers to the collection, appreciation and research activities on stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting, which does not necessarily involve the study of stamps. It is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare, or reside only in museums.
I collected stamps as a child, years before I'd ever purchased my first postcard. While I no longer actively collect postage stamps I do enjoy looking at them.

Letters, documents and photographs give us windows into our past. They carry both the individual stories of our families and the broader historical narrative of local, national and global communities.

Oh, you’re showcasing some stamps again! (^_^)
The detail from a Hokusai print looks wonderful on that stamp.
I was wondering where that detail comes from so of course I immediately looked it up.
This is what I found (although you probably know):

“Five Beautiful Women,” a hanging silk scroll, depicts five women, arranged vertically. The women are thought to represent, from top to bottom, the five Confucian feminine virtues: poetry, flower arranging, domesticity, entertainment, and literacy. The woman shown on the stamp, the representative of literacy, is reading a letter or small book.

Yes, I knew you'd appreciate that! Did you see my Hokusai inspired bears? I mashed up a postcard with his Great Wave.
