Divers feeding fish as part of a live animal show at Marineland Studios, Florida.

Marineland opened as 'Marine Studios' in 1938, and quickly became the most popular of all Florida tourist attractions.
It was also an incorporated town with a couple of dozen residents, and businesses catering to the 300,000 visitors coming annually to visit the park in its prime.
The marina at Marineland provided a haven for cruising yachts on the adjacent Intracoastal Waterway.

Popularly known as the “World’s First Oceanarium,” Marine Studios was the premier destination to allow the general public to experience marine life up-close.
Not only did the tourists love the attraction, many movies were partially filmed there, including the Universal monster flick "Creature From The Black Lagoon".

After Walt Disney World opened in 1971, Marineland's attendance began a steady decline. Falling revenues, rising maintenance costs and competition from the newer Florida attractions all took their toll on the park, and the death blow came via a particularly bad series of hurricanes that swamped the Southeastern U.S., causing millions of dollars worth of damage. Marineland closed in ruins and the original tanks, buildings and marina docks were finally demolished in 2003.

In 2006, a new Marineland emerged from the ashes of the old, and shows with dolphin riders and tricks in a marine stadium have been replaced with an educational center featuring a 1.3 million gallon tank that provides several dolphin habitats. Visitors can see dolphins up close and even swim with them.

Jeeperes, this one really brings back the memories.  The place used to be such a thrill for a kid.

I thought of you immediately on this one! We all went to this place and had a great time. It was this and Cypress Gardens and Parrot Jungle were the Big Three, if I recall correctly. The newest incarnation I understand is more fitted with the times, more ethical with regard to the animal showcasing. Less circusy and more natural spectacle.

I see what you mean about their being more concerned for the animals welfare.  I applauded when the Orca shows were, at last, regulated for the benefit of all concerned.

I had forgotten all about the  Parrot Jungle.  Now I remember going there once, and my Mom bought one of their postcards portraying a pretty young woman adorned with beautifully colored parrots.

Oh cool, I would have that card if it's a linen card- I own the complete numbered set of linens From Parrot Jungle. There are tons of photochromes from Parrot Jungle and Busch Gardens bird shows. Bright feathers sell well!
I remember going to PJ with my father in the 70s(?) and having those giant parrots sit on my neck shoulders and arms. They were free flying, no cages or tethers.

Really ?  How cute.  They actually sat on yo.  I'll bet that was a unforgettable feeling.

Yes, those cards are really saturated in color.  Love the effect.

They were very, very big birds. Giant claws and beaks. But I wasn't afraid they seemed very nice. When they call out though you can hear them all around the park. I can't imagine what it's like to have one shout in your ear.

My family loved this place in its heyday. All sorts of marine animal shows.
Also this place is wonderful for fish exhibits - more of a museum than a water circus. Better for the animals.
