"In a setting of old China, with shrines, lily pools, and courts, the Chinese have gathered art treaures of the Orient. Here is offered silks, antiques, jewelry, and thousands of beautiful souvenirs. The delicacies are fit to delight the palate as well as the eye."
Chinatown in L.A. dates back into the 19th century. Immigrants came to "the Golden State of California" seeking work and wealth. By the 1920s the neighborhood had become a slummy eyesore, so developers bought it all up and razed it to build new housing to accomodate the population boom. Chinatown's citizens moved several blocks east and rebuilt into "New Chinatown" in 1930. This happened at the same time Olvera Street was being redesigned as the quaint Little Mexico tourist mecca it is today.
