ALWEG MONORAIL
Seattle , Washington

Reverse caption:

Two symbols of modern time: the Alweg Monorail and the 600-foot Space Needle.
Both were inaugurated in 1962 for the Seattle World's Fair and both are still in operation,
the Monorail in the service of rapid transportation the Space Needle as
the lofty locale of magnificent sightseeing and epicure.

The line and its trains were built by Alweg Rapid Transit Systems.  The monorail began operating on March 24, 1962, shortly before the World's Fair opened. During the six months of the Fair, the monorail carried over 8 million passengers.

After the Fair closed, the Century 21 Corporation, which produced the Fair, assumed ownership of the monorail at no cost. In 1965, the City of Seattle bought the monorail for $600,000. Today, annual ridership of The Seattle Center Monorail is around 2 million.

Somehow monorails feel so futuristic to me. Even traveling with the Shinkansen is still a train ride (but admittedly an awesome one!), but I’d say a ride on a monorail is more of an event, if you know what I mean.

Are there actual stops on this? Is it used as commuter rail or just a novelty?

The Monorail travels directly between Westlake Center Mall (5th Ave and Pine St) and Seattle Center (adjacent to the Space Needle and Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP)). There is only 1 stop so you won’t get lost! A one way ride takes about 2 to 3 minutes.

Some day I'll get out there. The Pacific Northwest seems quite unique.
