When you make an image on the normal way, if you zoom in you'll find squares. That's called a bitmap image and each square is a pixel. The only way you can change an image is by changing pixels, since the objects depicted in the image aren't independent of each other.
A Vector image is an image composed of lines (or paths). These lines can be straight or curved and are defined by mathematical functions. Closed paths forms areas that can be filled with color, patterns or textures. An open path or a closed path are both objects. On a vector image, all the objects are independent of each other and can be manipulated without compromising the quality of the image or the other objects around. The most important feature of vector images is that, whatever how much you zoom in, the image will never loose definition.
In the end, a vector image can be exported has a bitmap of any size you want, like the one above.
(Note: Do not confuse this definition of vector with the physical or mathematical definition!)
