Description My entry for Resin-Aperture 'sΒ September 2014 Challenge - Fill the Frame . ^_^

TBH I was a little confused with the concept of "Filling the Frame" being used interchangeably with Close-Ups and Extreme Close-Ups. Because, really, if you compose your shot (and your subject) right you can actually do a full body shot while still filling up the frame.

So I ran the challenge on this particular pose, of Frei and Blake in an embrace. I cannot go too close because that would cut out one of the two characters, and I cannot go too far because that would lose the intimacy I'd like to convey in the shot. So I ended up with a Medium Shot which affords me the best way to include both characters, and then by Filling the Frame I eliminate the background and bring full focus to the two.

In conclusion, I'd say Filling the Frame is a similar but quite separate technique you can apply alongside the different shot types. Where Close-Ups and Extreme Close-Ups deal with the distance between you and your subject, Filling the Frame instead deals with the exclusion of as much background as you can, to bring focus to your subject.

The concept of getting closer isn't necessarily just about distance from camera to subject, but also about the borders around the subject. "Getting closer" almost means "cropping out unnecessary items in the photo".

Also, because we want to appeal to both skilled photographers and beginners, using [extreme] close-ups helps make more easily understood examples. I'm really happy that you decided to stick to your idea and not crop it closer! We don't necessarily want everyone to do the same example that was given but for some people it's more difficult to understand the concepts and it makes it easier if they have a guide to go by. :3Β

If you have questions like this in the future, please feel free to ask us! We don't mind clarifying our explanations (sometimes we're in a bit of a rush unfortunately and things can get confusing).

I love this shot, by the way! <3

I felt it was helpful to differentiate the two concepts from each other, because it opens up for more possibilities in composition. Like in this picture , the two top pictures are examples of ECU's coupled with Filling the Frame, while the two bottom pictures are Close-Ups that don't necessarily Fill the Frame, and instead uses Negative Space for a different effect. ^_^

I definitely understand why it helps for beginners to explain a new technique in terms of something they are more familiar with, though. ^_^

Also, I did not pursue a question reply in the Challenge post because, admittedly, my method of learning a technique is "how far can I push it before it no longer applies" and that might just confuse others more. "~_~

Thank you for the compliment~! I'm glad it qualifies for the Challenge! β™₯

Yes they are definitely different and I'm glad you pointed it out! I think for the most part we just assume that experienced photographers don't need as much explanation and some things are understood. :3

That is a good strategy! I think it helps to create a more dynamic image if you think of the challenge in that way. Even so, you can always send the group a note if you'd like an answer to any of your questions and we can answer it the best we can. The group isn't only to help beginners, after all. :3

You're welcome! I'm always interested to see what you'll come up with for the challenges.

I think this really captures a soft and tender feel. It's beautiful~!

I think they used close-up/extreme close-up as a way to explain for those who might not be totally certain of filling the frame? Because forΒ Contre-jour they also used Silhouette and though they are similar they're not exactly the same.

ANYWAY, again this is a really lovely piece and I really love it. It's so expressive.Β

I think it's to give those who aren't comfortable with the more complex portions of the challenges a chance to still participate.

You are very welcome. I always love your dolls, they're so beautiful and styled so wonderfully~!
