Description Despite being the birthplace of the Union Party and the Colonial integration movement, little has actually changed for Bradbury since its admission to the Union in 2134. In some respects Bradbury city has lost power and influence, now relegated as the official capital of Mars, rather than the de facto capital of the Off-Earth colonies.

Situated on the northern banks and cliffs of the Mariner Valley, Bradbury bisects the great waterways into Tharsis proper, serving both as a great consumer economy for the goods of Mars and the Solar System, and one of the larger Martian exporters of raw materials mined from the Thartian highlands. Bradbury remains the center of power on Mars, and one of the planet's oldest settlements, with its great dome still seen as a symbol of power across the solar system.

Did Bradbury and other major first cities fund the creation of the major settlements in surrounding states? Before they where states of course, I’m thinking something similar to the early colonization of New England, settlements found by colonists from a particular colony, but slowly diverging and forming distinct politics and culture separate from the initial settlers?

Well, yes and no. The first colonies were paid for by either the founding companies of the Mars Corporation or by independent companies formed specifically to establish a colony. Bradbury was the first colony to adopt a model by which they'd establish colonies for people to settle in and be "governed," under a common market. This was eventually adopted by the other colonies.

Ah, is there any remaining aspects of company rule on Mars at present?

Not beyond a handful of obscure towns and neighborhoods that are technically unincorporated municipalities run by the same companies that founded them. The longest lasting BIG company with administrative duties was Praxis Corp, which built and controlled the New Richmond elevator (in fact downtown New Richmond is in Praxis County). Praxis remained in direct control of the elevator and most of New Richmond right up until the First Martian Revolution (a political movement against corporate rule right when colonization was ramping up in the 2080s). After that Praxis just got the rights to one of the financial districts of New Richmond, and as of 2160 the company is no longer in operation and its components have either been absorbed by local municipalities or other private companies.

Funny, I always imagined that they'd name something after Bradbury on Mars!

Love this piece, and love the series. Please keep it up!
