sorry for the late reply
They are very energetic creatures, and very social too. People who get them I think expect a sort of cat or dog like creature, but they are nothing like either.
They don't do well in a cage situation and become very aggressive. our run free all day, and dig for their own food, while we supplement them with fruit and raw meat.
most people donβt realise that they form a bond with the animals and people they live with in captivity, and essentially become part of the 'pack' and because of this any intruder into the 'packβ gets told off with a bite (which is pretty bad) comparatively their teeth are the size of a lion, so you can imagine their teeth are about the size of an average house cat, they are about the size of a chinchilla and they bite all the way down to the gum, and donβt let go... itβs a very serious bite.
Most people get rid of them when they find this out which is sad!
I have two meerkats my female and Male have both been rescued from different circumstances, I got my female when she was 4 weeks old, and my male when he was 2 weeks old... in the wild they only leave the burrow at 4 weeks so I had to work hard with my little male. But my Female turned 6 years old in October and my male will turn 4 in February
They are very hard work to have as pets and I would not recommend anyone no matter how experienced you are with wild animals to get one.
Sorry for the long comment

oh, so it seems that the opinion I heard about meerkats was very correct. When we look at them they look just like huggable little kitties, just a bit thinner. But it is just the first impression. I have never noticed that they have so big teeth's!
I often wonder why people take wild animals as pets, I can understand that someone can be fascinated with snakes, spiders or even crocodiles, but they are not pets to be held at home... And soon such people just throw away the animals they loved 'so much' just some time earlier :/
It is great that there are people who can take care of the more demanding animals and your meerkats have a good home with your family. The way you described their life sounds great. It is great that they can run free all around the house. I think it is very important for any animal (I often feel bad for any chinchila or hamster who is always kept in cage)

I thought I might've been the only one in love with meerkats. They really are awesome, aren't they?
