Description One of these mornings
You're gonna rise up singing
You're gonna spread your wings, child
And take to the sky

-Summertime

Phew, not bad for a days work. I think this is my best digital painting attempt, I've never done as much hair as this (infact I've only done hair 3 or 4 times). But it ain't perfect, and thats what I like about it. Janis Joplin as she truly was.

I made 3 versions of this, not with alot of differences but here's a small version of each --> [link]

While creating this, listening to the only thing I should be: Mercedes Benz. I would have titled this piece Mercedes Benz but it just wouldn't work out as well. Summertime will have ta do!

Here's the walkthrough: [link]

Groovy work, and I love the rough way you painted her hair True it's not perfect, but perfection isn't always beautiful.

Wonderful piece (:
I really like the fact that only her glasses are coloured. It's more interesting that way.
However you could work some more on details in certain areas like hair, arms and clothing. It looks okay right now, but it might be even better with some improvements

Thank you I tweaked it a bit now, and uploaded a new version. No big difference, just changed her clothes as you said, with some fancy shmancy brushes that is more like the stock. Her glasses had a ugly yellow blob on the side, so I took that away too. The hair I just can't do much about, I like it's craziness in a way, and if I did have to change it I'd have to start from the beginning again. Thanks alot

Hey yorkey-sa! Now I've heard you've requested a critique from the lovely people at *devCRIT , so here it is...

Firstly, I'd like to say how fantastic this piece is and you can instantly see how much time and effort has gone into producing it. This makes it quite difficult to critique and to find flaws (which is really what a critic does unfortunately!), but I've done my best and here are my comments;

The piece is very detailed with certain areas really standing out. The fabric on her t-shirt, her face, jewellery and hand are very realistic and I personally think these sections are the ones your most comfortable painting. However the main part which I feel needs some work is the hair, as it seems a little 'all over the place'. Chances are that was the idea but finished it looks rather rushed and less detailed than the rest of the piece. I'd recommend perhaps doing a hair study, in which you choose a subject with quite a bit of hair detail and see if you can replicate it. Theres a nice little tutorial here by artist Linda Bergkvist if that helps!

The only other aspect I'd like to comment on is a kind of personal choice really. I feel that the glasses are a little too low down on her face. To be honest the glasses could be in the extact same position on the reference image (if you used one that is) as the finished painted piece. Sometimes even though you replicate a piece exactly, some aspects may seem slightly off, something you can get a lot with figures; arm and leg placement for example. I said this is a personal choice above, as if they look fine to you then there's no need to worry about it!

I hope that helps and keep up the good work!

Oh also I've just realised that I completely forgot to mention that the orange tint added to the glasses was a very clever idea and it really makes the whole image pop!

Thanks soo much.

About her glasses, that is the way she wore it. She always had these oversized granny glasses that were quite low. But about the hair, I agree with ya. I can never do it right. My intent was to make it messy and not really realistic, and do something funky with it (like this one here [link] ) but I couldn't really pull it off, it became too messy. Thanks for the tutorial, I've seen it before but totally forgot about it!

Thanks again for the whole critique, *devCRIT is just awesome.

Your welcome

I can see exactly what you are on about with the hair. It can be very difficult to actually get what you want. I think when you want to have a different 'style' for the hair than whats used in the rest of the piece, it can be challenging to get it to fit/look right.

Keep practicing though as it really does help! Try different ideas that you think wouldn't work as they may just suprise you.
