Description >>;; A much-belated birthday gift for hlwar , who loves Ed Jr. and gave me such a deep appreciation for his character. If you haven't yet read her fanfiction "Into The Nothing", I highly suggest you give it a read, like right now.
Into the Nothing | Part I
See, I even left you a link right there.

I knew I wanted to draw Ed for Heather for her birthday gift, but oooh my goodness, he's given me trouble. D; That hair of his drives me up a wall. (Ed, can you even get a comb through that birds' nest, or would the teeth of the comb snap off in your snarls?) I think I have finally given in and decided to upload this attempt because it is the best of everything I tried. (It probably had something to do with me eventually just forgetting about worrying over his hair's body and just rolling with it; somehow that made it turn out less terrible.)

><; I'm so sorry this is just a messy sketch, Heather dear. You deserve way better because oh my goodness, you're an amazing and creative person and you are so inspirational and supportive. ;~; I cannot thank you enough for your friendship and I'm so sorry this is late. But I wish you a happy (and VERY belated) birthday nonetheless!

YORU!! OH MY GOSH, YORUUUU~~!!

I feel like I'm just gonna keep repeating your name in happy awe and disbelief. XD I gotta stop trying to leave thoughtful comments right at the moment I look at these amazing Eduardito pieces, because it's just not happening. Brain goes squee~     Thank you!!! And like, wow, I kinda suspected when you said you were drawing me something it would be Ed, but I never imagined he'd look so gosh-darn COOL in your style! I'm staring—I'm literally staring at his face, it's so handsome and expressive! And with that "Uh..." comment it looks like he's all: "I should feel sheepish, but I'm too bad-boy runaway to feel sheepish, so yeah." *is adorably guapo instead* His eyes are beautiful too, by the way; I love the way you shade eyes, it adds a nice lil' manga to an animated style.

THAT HAIR. That hair drives many an artist up the walls, I imagine. Heck, it still drives me bonkers, too, because the volume sweeps up and forms a very precise shape, which I can't seem to replicate at all. You know, I feel like you can read a lot about his character in that damn hair. I think it shows a sorta "wild child", like his poor old abuelo didn't upkeep with regular hair cuts. Plus, running away from Argentina is a long-ass trek and boy didn't bother 'bout the tangles (and birds ). I headcanon that the first thing his father did when he moved him into his home at the end of Invasion was take him to a barber, haha~

Best advice, right there. Whenever I have trouble drawing something, it never turns out. But as soon as I sit down to doodle in boredom, then I'm able to actually draw something decent. So in the end, I think "letting it go" and just giving him wild style hair worked out, because I think you did a marvelous job!!

Aww, sweetie, you have absolutely nothing to apologize for! I don't mind the lateness at all, and there's never any reason to apologize for "messy sketches" with me. I tell everyone I love pencil sketches! It's my favorite thing in art, I Watch several people who do nothing but, and I truly admire artists who render in pencils and paper. There's a raw honesty to a pencil sketch that's just gorgeous, and it shows every bit of talent. I am always eager to see your new uploads and all your wonderful sketches!! And this is not "just a messy sketch", this Eduardo is everything to me! Because it came from such a beautiful person, an amazing artist with a unique style, and a caring, awesome friend like you, Yoru!!

D'ah, my word, and all those compliments! THANK YOU for always supporting my writing, Yoru! It sincerely means a lot to me, you have no idea (or maybe you do, as one writer to another XD). And really, it's my pleasure to be there for you (n'aww, I didn't think I was inspirational... me, really?  ) and I'm just happy beyond words to have you as a friend!! So thank you, too!!

Okay, enough of my babbling! See how happy you made me?! Thank you very, very much!! I love it and YOU, so much!!

*chuckles* I can completely understand that struggle. Sometimes it's just way too hard to think of something coherent to say when you're trying to comment on gifts. No worries there, hon~!!   And you're more than welcome!! I figured you would've deduced that I was going to draw Ed (I'm quite predictable that way.) OOoooh, and I'm honored to hear that you think he looks cool in my style!   He's definitely a lot of fun to work with, Eduardito, and I can see why you love him~. Aaahh, the eyes? I would say that once someone draws in anime/manga style for years, it's difficult to work it out of one's style, but I have always loved how expressive and detailed manga eyes tend to be, so I'm happy you like it!

Oooh goodness, that hair of his! I don't think I've ever seen another character whose hair is quite so tricky to recreate in art! Often hair is drawn with either solid lines or lines that tend to swoop more naturally (regardless of whether the hairstyle is curly, wavy or straight.) Ed's hair is jagged with, was you said, such a precise shape, and it incorporates both solid and swooping lines. But I think you're right; in spite of how hard it is to draw his hair, there's a lot to be read into Ed's character just by looking at that hair of his! (Definitely something I can see having really grown worse and more wild when he ran away from home!)   I can imagine any poor barber that looked at Ed's hair would probably pray his scissors didn't break.

It's interesting how that works, doesn't it? The moment you stop agonizing over some things and just draw to draw, somehow things come more naturally and work out better!! And thank you!! Definitely happy I just went ahead and let it go.

Well, my hope is that next year I'll make you something on time. Falling behind isn't something that sits well with me on a personal level, but it helps to know that you don't mind this being so late. I'm also delighted to hear that you like traditional pencil sketches!!   It doesn't feel like something most people here on dA actually care that much for, because so many people adore digital work, even digital sketches. I'm still getting used to digital work and perhaps one day I'll do more with it but I'm so much more comfortable with traditional media when it comes to my own work. So know it makes me so happy to hear that you like it all the more for being a pencil sketch of Ed.

And you're more than welcome~!! You're so talented as a writer yourself and it's a shame that more people haven't read your writing (especially since Young Justice seems to have become more popular since its cancellation. I've noticed that when a series grows more popular after cancellation, fans are more willing to turn to fanfiction and writing to sort of keep the flame burning.) And yes, you are inspirational!! You put so much thought and effort and care into what you do, and it's definitely inspiring to continue to work harder and continue learning (both as a person and an artist/writer.) And again, you're always welcome!

X3 And again, always!

Haha, glad you understand my dilemma. XD It's a good thing I don't have to thank you in person because I suck at talking, I'd be stumbling over my own tongue and have to resort to big bear hugs instead. I'm such an odd potato. But I really appreciate all the love and effort you put into this wonderful Ed, and he is such a cutie pie! Thank you so much!!

Ah ha, that explains it. Anime eyes definitely have their own set of artistic rules, and to my shame those lovely shoujo (or chibi) eyes are something I've never quite managed to replicate. The detail, my gosh! Cheers to you again, then. Although, I have heard many other artists say it is difficult to break the habit of drawing anime, if you start in it. I'm impressed you're so well-rounded, and I think you've gotten it to meld with your own style seamlessly.

Exactly! When you look at his close-up shots, his hair loses the overall shape, and instead has these ragged cuts with many little tufts sticking out. And I'm often trying to ascertain where the part in his hair is, since that's usually how I can define the starting point for hairstyles. But with his, it sometimes seems centered, and sometimes not. So I start with his bangs and work out from the sides, hoping it meets in the back in the proper formation. Curse your untamed locks, kid! (D'ahah, I think a barber would immediately add a surcharge to tame that mess.)

Aww, you're so sweet! I'm usually late with everything myself, and believe me, I understand how life can simply intervene and cause set-backs, most often with creative motivation. And I know from a few of your Journal hints and seeing other's comments, you've been having a hard time lately. I completely understand and there's no need to feel bad. I'm the type where the thought means everything (because my family stopped caring about holidays and birthdays after I hit, like, 10, so when someone remembers me, it's both surprising and touching, I can't even~) and just knowing you wanted to do something for me means the world. Thank you!!

YES! Pencils are a dying art form, and I feel like they've always been an under-appreciated traditional medium. Like, I even love messy storyboards and seeing WIPs. I do enjoy digital sketches, too, but again, with digital it's easy to fix and change things with the computer cheats; with paper and pencil, all you have is your own talent and your own skills to fix it with just an eraser—and the struggle is real. So definitely impressive to me. And it's the same with me: even though I do line and color digitally now, I just cannot learn to start with a sketch on the tablet, I'm still pencil and paper.

That's so nice of you to say, thank you! I'm happy knowing how much you enjoy my writing, and I value your opinion because your own works are epic! But I do understand I'll never be a popular writer in YJ because fans want stories of the characters they love, and since the Runaways were only in a mere two episodes, very few cared about them. (I also don't have OCs, that seems to be big, too.) Ah well, that's alright, though. I'm proud of what I've done, and the handful of close readers I have, most of whom are friends now. And OMG, you're too kind! I mean, of course I'm happy to be able to maybe uplift or motivate others, but I didn't imagine I was doing it by simply creating my own stuff. What I do is... just what I do, but knowing people as awesome as you see something in it, to feel inspired... Wow. That's incredibly touching to hear. Thank you!!
