This is my first really detailed digital painting. It took probably 10 hours to complete, not all in one sitting of course

Ami's Backstory
Ami lived with her mother and Akiko and her step father. He would come home drunk often and would hit Ami’s mother (Emi). In her rage, Ami started taking karate and ninjitsu classes when she turned 10 and was extremely gifted.
One evening when her step father had come home drunk again, Ami was in the room and Akiko was asleep upstairs. Ami’s hatred had been growing for her step father and this time she’d had enough.
Emi was in the kitchen cleaning up and Gorou began to snap at her about various things. Ami got up from watching TV and went to the kitchen, and she stood in the doorway. Gorou turns around and sees Ami standing there, staring him down. He gets angry and says “hey, you ssshould be in bed now!” Ami says to him “leave Mom alone.” Gorou laughs and says “or what!?” and goes to push Ami. Emi cries for him to stop. Ami then grabs his arm and breaks it in two places and throws him over herself. Emi and the girls leave and move to Tokyo, and have lived there ever since.
Ami was born with tattoos of wings on her back, and she lives her life slightly hiding them with her long, red hair. She gets into fights at school and no one really understands her, until she meets someone and he tells her he has a band. He asks her to join. Ami can play the electric guitar and sing really well.
After a traumatic experience of being attacked and nearly losing a good friend of hers, Ami spreads her black wings for the very first time. She saves herself and her friend. From that day on, nothing is ever the same for her.

In this picture, Ami stands against the storm that is brought into her world. She grasps at her sword wishing for the light to come through. She knows that the only way to move forward is to fight.

You definitely pay attention to detail. Each part of her body has bits of detail - from the curls of the hair, the sparkles in her eyes, the texture and design of her armor, the clouds of her background, and even the myriads of feathers on her weapon and wings - that shows you want to make sure that every part of your character should not be missed.
I like how the colors are limited to shades of blue and red, which creates a sort of simplicity that contrasts the many details in the picture. Also, the fact that she has wings flowing against the stormy background (hence the title), emphasizes that contrast. When one reads her back story (and knows her a little bit more), one can understand why this character is depicted this way. And I believe you have portrayed the message well.
