Flash had never particularly liked the dark. On the contrary: he feared it with every fiber of his being. After all, the darkness held all kinds of dangers. As he sat there on the park bench, his mind reeled with the possibilities of what might be plotting to kill him. There could be a thousand angry opossums hiding in the bushes, liking their sharp fangs as their glowing, red eyes fixed on him, looking for the perfect spot to pounce. There could be a crazy clown hiding in the water, waiting until he let his guard down to surface and pelt him with hundreds of strawberry pies, which he was allergic to. Heck, for all he knew, his psychotic father could have broken out of prison and would be hunting him down right now, a knife or other weapon of some sort raised to strike.
Suddenly, he felt Twilight take his hand, stopping the fearful thoughts in their tracks. The girl who had captured his heart had been sitting next to him this whole time, waiting for him to say something. She scooted closer to him and gently pressed her body up against his, her warmth reassuring. Flash smiled, gazing out into the night. The stars, which had seemed so dim before, now shone brightly, piercing through the darkness with their brilliant light.
This wasn't the first time Flash had felt a light pierce the darkness. When he first realized how much Twilight loved him, he could feel her easy yet radient glow pierce through the dark thoughts that had plagued him his whole life. With her around, he found that he had the courage to take the lead, to stand up for himself in the face of oppression, and to protect those he loved. This was something he had lacked in his younger years, but that didn't matter anymore. Those days were all behind him.
All that mattered to him was the present, the warm glow of the stars above, and the girl that sat next to him. She gave him courage. She gave him hope. She helped him soar. She was his light.
