Description I rarely post any of my 3D work...

This was the final assignment for my Character Modeling Class last quarter. We had to create a creature using different anatomies of various animals. I chose to do a parrot (or parakeet thing) smushed together with a lion fish and frog. I tried to make the fins look sort of like mock wings.

This ended up getting me the "Best of Quarter" award, which I'm still befuddled as to why. Seriously, there were some really amazing models that were done in that class in general, and I thought there were others much more deserving of the award than I. But apparently the instructor chose the recipient based on overall collective quality of work that we did over the quarter.

I think it's just because it's low poly. (Don't remember exactly how many...)

I've named this particular fella "Spazz"

WOW! What program did you use? I've modeled before, but they've turned out pretty sorry looking and not very functional for animation, mostly.

If you could get a mad scientist to create that as a living creature, you'd make a killing selling them as pets. xP

It looks awesome.

This is really cool. ^^ I could tell right away that it was modeled after a lionfish, but I wouldn't have guessed the frog part unless you had told me (which you did, lol). A very interesting critter, indeed. And Spazz fits.

oh wow. i'm itching to learn maya myself.
is it really as difficult as i've heard?

i'm going to learn in as an independent study next semester in my tech class. unfortunately i have to read up on it and teach myself...no one in the building knows how to use it. so they're leaving me to the wolves.

but my goodness... if i could ever create something as wonderful as that, i'd be ecstatic. love love love it <3

Awesome job! Amazing job on the anatomy - The bone structure looks just right. Looks just about like its going to hop out of the frame!

I can't help but be reminded of Fullmetal Alchemist, and the parakeet Chimaera thingy that you see at the very beginning of the series.

Holy...this is low poly version? Looks way too high poly...but damn it's very amazing that you've kept it low poly while it looks high poly quality...amazing...

By the way, which modeling method did you choose? Polygonal? Nurbs? Sub D?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YoukaiYume In reply to CrucifixJEL [2008-10-30 18:59:52 +0000 UTC]

The original version is low poly. I just hit the "smooth" button. It's ideal when you're modeling though to keep it as low poly as possible. That way, when you hit the smooth button and it turns it high poly, it will still be kept to a minimum and would still look just as good as if it was a kajillion polys.

Nightscream452 [2008-10-30 16:59:48 +0000 UTC]

Wow! nice job youkai, thats pretty imaginative. What matrial was used to make him? and any intentions to maybe to a ceramic color version?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

YoukaiYume In reply to Nightscream452 [2008-10-30 17:10:07 +0000 UTC]

It's a 3D model. Which means it was made on a computer in a 3D program called "Maya", not by clay. And if I wanted it a different color I could just change the material/color settings on it.

To answer your question it is made up of polygons.

Nightscream452 In reply to YoukaiYume [2008-10-30 19:40:20 +0000 UTC]

3D huh? uh oops! I thought it was done with clay, it looked so tangeble.
