The deviation that you linked to had very warm tones and warmth is usually associated with incubation, etc.
I think the lightness and cold feeling to this photo work better because of the bird's behavior and actually being "new"... but maybe that was unintentional.
I can understand what you mean about feeling like "dad". Animals are wonderful creatures and I think people change when they feel their humbleness.
You have another shot of a chick in your hand but it has more of an overhead view and doesn't give the feeling this one does because the large hand leads up to the small chick, obviously giving the frail, simplistic characteristics.
I could ramble on and on, but you get my point right?

thats an awesome shot! i love birds aswell. We found a blackbirds nest in an old trailor 2 months ago but the chicks from it disappeared one day, they were too young to fledge. Its very upsetting
