Aye I thought so Still it may but useful just for yourself in the painting program to have a 50% grey layer. The context of  colours affects their perception as well.

In addition, try to get a little texture in your brushes! Just some grungy ones that have random strokes/etc in them. Keep them low-opacity and then slowly build up your colour layers. That way you can build up nice colour gradations that also have individual variance in hue. Unless you're aiming for the flatter shade aesthetic of course, but it's still a nice thing to experiment with just for the experience alone
