I think you have a very good eye for color and putting the right values where they need to go. I can also suggest practicing some of the foundational 3D forms in your portraits, really push and pull some of the curves of his face to make him pop, there's a really great guideline for facial proportions called the Loomis Method and that helps a lot when painting 3D forms on 2D surfaces. It would also help to do a ton of shadow and form studies so you can have confident placement of shadows and light.

It takes a ton of practice, it also helps to model stuff in 3D, whether by clay or software. Also, it's a really relaxing way to practice.

I think either the mouth should be moved just the slightest bit upwards or the nose should be a bit bigger.
