You did a great job on your costume and weapon. One thing about the weapon though, and it's only an observation: I would think that the staff portion would be larger, to balance out the weight of the double axe. I know that in crafts we use what we can, but I was just thinking that the weight of the metal, in reality, would be too heavy for the staff at that width. A thick, sturdy shovel handle would probably be more fitting. But of course, for those on a budget... what can we do?

I seriously want to design & make my fanfic character's armor... I'm just too broke right now. If I was rich, I'd commission a local leather-worker who specializes in fantasy. It would be my one geeky splurge.

thank you

for the axe, I'm agree with you. Honeslty, It's my first weapon (well, my first axe, the first "weapon" I made was a little sister's syringe from Bioshock) and I'm not found of the result. Just like you I like when it's realistic and efficiant, that's why I try more and more to work with "real" materials (leather, wood... and maybe metal! One of my friend is a blacksmith so he will learn/show me some techniques. We have to work on a full armor but It will take a really longgggggggggg time!)

But as you said, work with those kinf of materials is really expensive and request a lot of skills too!  Will you try to work with leather for your fanfic character? I should try soon just an undrbust thought x)

(thank you! you make me practice my english haha XD)

Hehe.

I wish I could work with leather, but I have no place for it. I only know of a shop that works with real leather, and it is about 1 hour, 30 minutes away from me. But they do specialize in games & fantasy armor. It would take me a full year, and lots of money, to have just the leather armor that I want. That doesn't include the real metal pieces.

But for you, the more you practice, the more you learn. So keep making cosplay items! I learn best when I make things that I want to use, also.

don't worry! I don't have place for it too xD I work on the floor haha (huhu... my room is a real mess!)

You leather work is really far away from you! but you can try to do it on your own with small pieces (vambraace for exemple), It could be cool!

and once again you are right: working for something you will not use only for cosplay is the best

I don't have a place to work, other than the garage, for messy crafts. I don't own this place, so I need to be careful with what I do.

that more difficult in that case but even so! you can try! (yes, I can be very stubborn!)

Thank you!
I did it with foam board (really easy to cut!) cover with primer (bad idea.... you should use gesso or something else, because primer leave a lot of marks) and the detail was made with eva foam (1mm) and foam bord

Yeah, gesso is the best thing I've used. I'd learned that back in high school, years ago. If you're doing anything related to acrylic craft paint, always use gesso. I've painted on wooden planks, cardboard, plaster (from carving) and a few odd pieces. I realized that it gives a nice, smooth finish since it paints right on and only needs to be sanded down. The sanding makes it perfectly smooth. Man, I miss doing crazy crafts.

Well, my favorite technique (when I use eva foam), is to mix gesso with some white glue (diluated with a bit of water), It's more "easy" to spread on the foam, and It give a nice smooth result.

But thank you for your advice, I never sanding them xD (on the sheet foam It's impossible, but for the hard pieces It's great to know!)

I had no idea abut adding glue and water to it. Interesting.   I used to stretch my own oil canvases for art class (we had no choice), and she told us it was necessary to sand down gesso. You may not need to add glue and water as a result, unless you just like it that way.

It's only for the thine eva foam sheets^^ more easy to spraid (I put gesso, then a bit of whiteglue+water), this is a bit useless for the other supports.  I guess you are an art student? (by the way, thank you very much for the watch><)
