My grandmother, watching my grandfather lying unconscious on the hospital bed. I didn't get to add as many details as the one of my grandfather, as she moved more and I did not have as much time. My grandmother is 83, and my grandfather was 93 when he died. The thing is, my grandmother never loved my grandfather, until he grew sick. She was in an arranged marriage, and my grandfather did not work to support her and five children. He was an alcoholic and often beat her in his stupors. But the thing was, he loved her from the beginning. Even as he grew older, she never once told him she loved him. Never divorced, but the fighting never stopped either. That was her pride, her stony mask as she watched the man she did not want to marry waste away on a white bed. But perhaps, my grandfather had a happy death. My grandmother spent every waking hour caring for him, and before he died--she confessed to him, told him she loved him--and in that moment, she looked like a school girl.
