Description

A BIG HONKIN' MOTH. At least, I believe it's a moth, due to the antennae. Ah, yes, according to research, these appears to be an Atlas Moth (Attacus atlas).

Oh, and the title is because this was a HUGE moth. I mean, it was giant. At least as long (wing tip to wing tip) as my hand to elbow. So it was big enough to carry around a few passengers (other butterflies and such) if it had wanted to.

A bit more information on the moth: "Atlas moths are considered the largest moths in the world in terms of total wing surface area [upwards of c. 400 cm2 (62 sq in)]. Their wingspans are also amongst the largest, from 25–30 cm (10–12 in). Females are appreciably larger and heavier."

Okay. So. When I took this picture, I must have been on a slant. Thus, the picture was slanted. When I tried to straighten the image, it ended up cutting the wings off a bit on the sides! I tried multiple times, different angles, different sizes, etc. And the result was always the same. I really wish I could change that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I didn't do much in the way of cropping or editing. Tried to dim the background a bit. But I love the way the light is filtered by the wings! Such a cool (and unintentional on my part) effect!

Thanks. I personally love moths and butterflies but I'm not overly fond of caterpillars. But this guy was so big, it didn't seem like a bug at all. Like a different kind of bird, lol.

What an amazing moth. Where did you find it?

It was in a local butterfly house but they're found in the wild in southeast Asia in the tropical forests.

As do I but I always get a little sad when people believe that butterflies are the only ones that can be pretty with the bright colors. A lot of times, moths have the really beautiful markings.

Actually, at the Butterfly House in Faust Park. I think it was a $6 admission price but it was a great place to photograph. I saw two of these moths just hanging out on the same tree and there was a line of people trying to take their picture.

Man - I saw one of these the last time I was at The Butterfly House and I just could not get a decent shot of it at all. I tried for about 5 minutes before I gave up.

Nice shot!

Ah, really? There were 2 just hanging out on a tree when I went, posing very nicely for the multitude of photographers. I just wish I could have framed it better!

I love huge moths like these! One of many reasons that moths are better than butterflies.

Thank you, though! I think I may have to visit that butterfly house again, even though it was a little expensive.

Next month, I'm going to the Appalachians in Tennessee. Not my ideal state to visit (generally lots of close-minded Southerners with missing teeth) but at least up in the mountains, I should be able to do some landscape photography. Then in August, I'm going to Chicago with my wife, which is a tradition of ours. She was born in Chicago so we try to visit as much as we can and now that I have a job again, we can finally afford to go again. I like traveling but the first trip is sort of a kidnap thing from my family. I'm not really allowed to say no. The second trip will be much more fun.

Yeah, the US South wouldn't be my first pick, either, but it's beautiful in the Appalachians. I'd love to take photos there. I can't wait to see what you post. C= One of the first trips together that my wife and I took was to Chicago. Sounds fun! C=

I've been to the Rockies before but not the Appalachians. The Appalachians, to me, aren't even real mountains because they're too tiny.

Ah, we love Chicago. It's one of our dream places to live. That and Canada or England.

He's a big furry moth. I love moths. So much prettier than butterflies. I actually have a couple pictures of him, one a macro shot of his head and thorax because I wanted those details. It's really nice but I wasn't sure if I should upload it since his wings are cut off.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juicyzombie In reply to yurizemira [2011-05-26 14:18:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think what really gives this picture it's flair is the spread of his wings, so I don't know if a picture where they cut are cutt off would be as good, but I suppose I'd just have to see it to know for sure.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

yurizemira In reply to juicyzombie [2011-05-26 16:58:17 +0000 UTC]

That's probably true. His markings on on his wings and that's where the eyes just want to go. But I still like his fluffy antennae. Maybe I'll ask Louisa to help me edit this a bit and add the details as a sort of mini-thumbnail.
