Description
Here is an artwork created for “There is Something More to Life than This” Silent Art Gallery Exhibition and Auction.
I created the piece specifically for the event as it was 'Dia De Los Muertos' themed in honor of the curator's late sister who was also an artist.
In the Mexican culture, butterflies(more specifically the monarch species) are believed to carry the spirits of the dead. During the Dia De Los Muertos holliday the Monarch butterflies also have their great migration occuring.
It was the longest 48 hours of my life haha, I worked on it for two days straight because I procrastinated in completing the piece. But overall that night without sleep was completely worth it!
I wanted to depict the soul of a butterfly as if it were disguised as a person celebrating the holiday. I was trying to give a sense that it could be possible that the souls of the dead themselves could transform into something so familiar we wouldn't be able to tell any different.
Created using Ink on 33 x 23 Watercolor paper
I'd love to hear what you think of it!
