Description
These character designs of Frances Ha played by actress and co-writer Greta Gerwig are inspired by Disney’s Paperman character sketches, traditional art & design and silk screen print based illustrations for fashion editorials. In terms of composition the illustrations are small in size and used alongside the film’s title graphic as a form of complementary interaction between the star of the film and her name, portraying a sense of inner conflict and light heartedness. The choice of colour language is considered with a sense of fun and likeability. Part of my design philosophy was to translate the old outdated graphic design work into a new modern styles. I attempted to capture the themes of dance, city life and moments with each design. The 3 characters have a sequential movement with time and form, seamlessly travelling from one character to the next. The illustrations were used on a film poster design for new wave indie comedy Frances Ha.
