Great test! One of my future pieces will have a 'black hole'. I have been trying charcoal and carbon out...but without success. Right now I'm leaning towards a really nice black 8B.

I am with you mixing graphite with charcoal and such.
I would perhaps go with 8B or even 9B, too.

Wow! Just a test? This has beautiful realism yet it also has what I really like about your work - the shading has a very distinct, soft texture that's characteristically yours. This is gorgeous work! The simplicity works for it.
