Description Watching over the Squeak-Easy

So, uh... yeah. The eagle-eyed among you might notice the date on this piece reads 09-11. I started this bit of linework a long time ago, early 2009 I think, and in my usual habit of running tens of projects at any one time, I came back to it now and again to add a bit more. It was never an easy task - I'm really not all that hot on non-organic stuff (I like soft curvy things. Oh, and drawing them, too), so I think it just got to the point where I felt I was labouring it and it fell off my 'to-do list', filed away in an old sketch book. Right up until a few days ago when I was looking for something else entirely and came across the sketch once again and felt a burning sense of shame that I hadn't finished him.

My linework has become a bit more exacting and maybe a touch more delicate since I started this so it was interesting trying to balance out the old with the new; I think I've blended them together ok in the end.

The whole idea came from the Squeak-Easy pun and from that point on it was just trying to get the idea of a 1920s style robot that assembled itself out of scrap. This was good for me as it meant I could actually get away with using curvy bits and pieces as that was the mechanical style of the time, trying to keep stuff from being too obvious beyond the hood/front of the car that makes up his torso/back. So lots of esoteric body-work, pistons and springs and sprokets etc.
As for the massive fur-collared great-coat and fedora, well, can't have a Prohibition-era gangster/detective without those things, can you?

Anyway you really need to know how to punish yourself with detail, it may have taken a while but the end result was worth it he looks fantastic! Like lucky Bob every time i take a look I seem to spot something new

Your linework is amazing, and the subtle shading really adds a nice sense of depth to it too; nice work!

I share your fondness for drawing curvy, soft things.

The robot looks awesome, although he looks so scary he might drive a man to drink!

I have noticed you've been rather diligent with that of late!

Also: I'd not like to drive a man to drink in the Squeak Easy. Motor Oil doesn't play nice with human insides!

if the devil is in the details then your well on the way to becoming a prince or princess of darkness .

the face has a very organic quality to it ..it feels like a old grizzled guy that has seen it all and knows all the tricks .

the grime on his face gives the illussion of a perpetual 5 0clock shadow , his square eyes make me think of a old mans square lensed reading glasses and the curve of his mouth really drives home the old grizzled vetren look .

his upper body looks like a old car and all his robotic parts have a retro futuristic feel .

the old duster jacket with its fur fringe and hat are icing on this cake .

this isn't some robotic mobster this is a freelancer ass kicker ala Bruce Willis from "Last man standing " which was of course a homage to Akira Kurosawas film Yojimbo.

you can see the wounds he's taken on his frame and nothing short of death itself gets in his way when he's commited himself which invariably means he is often out numbered and outgunned .

Sometimes a bots gotta do what a bots gotta do .

wonderful linework as usual my only complaint is you don't update as regularly as id like

makes me think of bruce willis from

Y'know, when I was drawing him I could never make up my mind whether he was 'good' or 'bad'; I even drew a part on him that could be coloured a certain way to make him a cop. On his left shoulder is a rotating light box that could be made into a good ol' red & blue flasher. Either way, he's got a life of his own now, a friend of mine is writing a game world around his concept!

All the little details are hell to draw but so worth it when they get noticed. You = awesome.
