More character re-design for my Eien world reboot! Wall of Text ahoy!

Reiner ‘Ren’ Ackermann, heavy weaponry technician from the Varsan Empire. Also a Waise (a telepath who refuses to submit to government and serve as a Watcher) with slightly pyromaniac tendencies (=sets enemies on fire), and part of a cell that has been trying to infiltrate government-sponsored projects. Ren’s in the long game in that regard, a plant who voluntarily underwent a memory gambit in order to pass for a law-abiding citizen and never attract the Watchers’ attention. He doesn’t fully know himself what he’s looking for by doing that (at any rate, an opportunity to get intel and/or strike from within), however his powers are strong enough for him to know that he’ll be either forced to serve or killed, so why not try his luck at something, eh?

I decided to ditch the whole secrecy angle around the telepathy business in Varsa. Varsans know telepaths exist, usually they fear them (after all, how could they protect themselves against someone who can read their minds?), and the people’s relationship with the Watchers—the State police—is very ambiguous in that regard, since those Wächtern hunt down political dissidents, sure, but also rogue telepaths. I’m definitely going for a terrorists-or-freedom-fighters vs. rightful-or-oppressive-police conundrum here, which is going to be interesting to write about.

'Waisen' is the name given to rogue telepaths in general, but Watchers more specifically use it to mean ‘...and possibly terrorist’ at the same time. There are organised Waisen cells, some are of the ‘anarchist’ type, others are simply a place for telepaths to find shelter—although it’s very difficult for them to interact openly as Waisen with regular people, since a mental scan on the latter will immediately reveal compromising information. Ren’s gambit is all the more dangerous that his ‘cover persona’ must be convincing enough to pass for a non-telepath whose surface thoughts can be scanned, while still hiding the real persona behind. If his cover is blown, he’s meant to get rid of whoever did it, or to kill himself if worse comes to worst.

Of course, things don't exactly go his way, his cover starts to slip due to his power being too strong in the end, and when it shatters for good, he kind of 'wakes up' in the middle of a blood bath. I so want to write that scene now, especially with all the fire he unleashes (the only weapon he has at hand at that moment). Hence the flames in this drawing.

He still gets to escape with Kittin, but I'm eager to see how she is going to react when she realises all her friends and crew died, uh, because of him.

Powers: Ren is particularly skilled at mind reading, control and deceit, as well as mastery of energy, such as heat/fire or kinetic energy. For the Watchers, he’s a Class 10 potential, which is the highest; Varsan ESP (which they call 'Seidr') deals with mind reading and coercion, and very seldom with other abilities—it’s just not in their genetic blueprint, so to speak, and anyone with additional abilities is either highly valued or killed on sight due to being too dangerous.
