Description Wanted to try realism and so thought "I'll hunt down a google ref and draw some cute guy". I actually really enjoy drawing from life and since my school and college art days my technique has come quite far. Even though his face is too wide ...

I appologise, for all the wonders of google, I do not know who he is. But if anyone does - I'd be happy to know ^^

Oh and I actually used graded pencils for once! Mech pencil (HB) and graded pencil 5B various rubbers and random scrap of paper... Super pro... heh...

Hm yeahh his face is indeed too wide -- at least around his eyes. 5 eyes across, as they say! xD The only thing I can really suggest for improvement is some post processing so we can see some of your tonal work D: I don't see any 5B pencil darkness here it all looks HB and a bit flat because of that D: actually, I would recommend using a variety of different grades between HB and 5B (or even 6B) to get full tonal effects. And, erm, I notice you have done some smudging D: damages the paper and make erasing difficult I suggest making any tonal changes with your pencil itself-- like how you have with the crosshatching. But yeahhhh,

Otherwise, pretty darn smashing! I think I love his nose the most-- and the fabric of his shirt! Very well done. and great choice of image, btw

^^ Thanks for the crit - I do appreciate some actual feedback on my work, so that's great. Although it isn't all HB, I do tend to avoid using too many dark tones because they are hard to come back from, but I am working on that. I prefer smudging to hatching though - hatching is too rough for my tastes (I do use it as well though). But we'll see if there is any improvement on the next drawing. ^^

Ah, well in that case I would suggest stepping out of the boundaries and trying some darker graded pencils!

There are multiple methods of hatching and crosshatching, I would recommend testing them all out before completely ruling out that technique as 'too rough'. I've just seen your Draco Malfoy picture and I don't want to seem like an overly persistent asshole or anything but I really think you would benefit from letting go of smudging. D: It looks flat.

BUT BUT BUT, I totally respect you as an artist. You do have a good eye for picking up minor details that add that extra bit of realism to the portrait, and in the Draco one it also adds that bit of character. Your style is very smooth and fined tuned to the forms of the nose and the eyes and the general shapes of things-- like the hands and the Quidditch glove.

You know what? - I like overly persistent assholes you! I gave "hatching" a go or should I say I tried something other than smudging (wasn't quite hatching) on a new drawing of mine. It was just something quick to test out the technique (and the picture is far from finished).

I noticed several things...

I drew everything out as normal with my trusty HB, then I switched straight to 4B and nothing happened or should I say, it wasn't getting any darker and I discovered that this was because I have a very "light hand" and that is why you could not see any evidence of my 5B pencil on this drawing - I wasn't using it properly. So I pressed harder... and would you believe it? There was depth. It was also very difficult for me to refrain from smudging - but I did. Lastly - this method took a lot longer! Which I suppose is better anyway, I had to keep working at it to get it looking "complete-ish". But that might mean I'll get bored a lot - I do that...

Anyway, I would just like to say one last thing (sorry) but Thankyou, I still have a way to go as a developing artist, but I can honestly say your "guidance" has helped me

And um... feel free to let me know what you think...

It looks like it has a lot of depth now! I especially love the shading and form his hair *_* and his lips! And those little tonal changes on the jacket are really very realistic. This be one fine drawing, my friend.

I'm glad to have helped You'll get faster, don't worry, and as you experiement with ways to make it look more complete-ish, I reckon you'd be having fun OR NOT. I DUNNO, THAT'S AN OPEN STATEMENT 8)

If you ever need a crit' for something, drop me a note, I'll be happy to help/suggest anything I can

Dorian Gray (I misspelled the last time) = a beauty of a young man in Oscar Wilde's novell "The picture of Dorian Gray". A fictional character the other characters can't resist.
