It was supposedly hinted at since season 2, but nobody other than small group of shippers really paid it any mind. The creators confirmed that they dated before, but this was never said on the show. Most of us normies thought she would end up with Finn, so when this happened it pretty much came out of nowhere and surprised everybody.

Now, I dont mean to be salty or toxic, and bear in mind, I havent watched the show in AGES, I dropped it for reasons that were probably not NEGATIVE, but I just lost interest.
But anyways, WHY IS THIS A THING? Princess Bubblegum is a self entitled, arrogant, heartless, blind to reality, ASSHOLE! Maybe she's changed since I last saw her? But last I saw her, she was pulling the standard trappings of any scientist, throwing away morality and common decency in exchange for scientific pursuit, throwing irrational blame on someone for a simple ACCIDENT, creating a baron or authority figure only to throw it away like it was nothing to her, and several other minute to major atrocities, all in pursuit of heartless science. She is SO blind to her own faults and reality, that EVEN WHEN MAGIC IS FLYING IN HER FACE, SHE STILL DENIES ITS EXISTENCE, IN A WORLD WHERE HEAVEN AND HELL ARE PHYSICALLY PROVEN TO EXIST, AND WHERE FREAKY MAGIC BEINGS ROAM FREELY EVERY DAY!
*Sigh* but maybe she's changed since then, im not trying to crap on this ship, but can you guys PLEASE tell me why im not supposed to be revolted that Marcelline would lower her self to be with PBG?

PB is a bit more mature with her decisions, but she still has a lot of flaws but Marcline and her have a lot chemistry together even if she is all what you said.
Beside I think it's because she had to be alone most of her life, and she couldn't even trust her own creations/family and the stress of taking care of her kingdom

Which they did show they weren't exclusive in having an intimate relation ship with just one gender or sexual orientation. They have shown interests in guys before though they are shown back together after the halt of the war and conflict with Golb. Therefore them as a couple is a (same-sex relationship). Same-sex relationship does not be used to jump to conclusion that they are gay.
