Description I've wanted to do some Gamera fan art for a long while now... this one came from screwing around with some sharpie markers at work one day, so yeah... no reference for the big G. Not bad for my first take on Gamera from memory, I think.

Then I took it home and spiffed it up in Photoshop. Wowee.

Based mostly on the GAMERA 2:ADVENT OF LEGION suit, though with some touches of the 3rd movie design. I think I gave him more tail than he's supposed to have, and the feet are... elephantine... but I dig it.

Great job for memory! I can barely draw anything by memory.
I hate the smell of sharpies though.

WOOOOOOOO!
my fave film was the one where he goes to the alien planet to fight guiron. "look, Gamera is go-go dancing!" has got to be one of the dumb funniest lines ever XD

I love the way you've coloured this, gives it an oldish feel.

Dude... once you see my other work, that "old-fashioned colouring" is going to get really old, really fast.

Sepia tone is my one trick, and I'm a pony.

Or something like that.

He doesn't look terribly aerodynamic...

zacdac In reply to avancna [2005-05-09 06:03:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... aerodynamic... well, maybe not really...

But he does actually do a good job of it. The flying pinwheel design totaly knocked my socks off the first time I saw GAMERA 2. I knew he flew... but I didn't know that he spun around like a flaming pinwheel! It was just so wild, so giddily outlandish, yet in a totally serious movie... that was the first time I ever saw Gamera onscreen, and it was love at first sight.

He has two "flight modes" though... he also tucks his rear legs in (which become "thrusters") and his forearms morph into huge, sea-turtle like flippers/wings. It's quite neat.

Once he tucks his limbs in and spins around in the the air he's plenty aerodynamic ^____^

I totally wrote a long reply to this comment, and it got lost somewhere... very strange.

Still new to DeviantArt, and it confuses me sometimes.

Gamera and Godzilla never fought because Toho and Daiei were competitors in the giant monster movie scene. Old Gamera movies were generally aimed at a more child audience, until his 1990's makeover. The new ones are darker, smarter and better-looking than any Godzilla film in decades... maybe ever. It helps that they also were given a bigger budget, so they dont' look as cheap as the new Godzilla films Toho has been belching out. The new Gamera Trilogy truly is the renaissance of Kaiju films.

Now that Sony owns both Toho and Gamera, there have been rumblings about a crossover movie... a Gamera VS. Godzilla. I'd totally LOVE to see that, even if it sucks. However, Toho is putting Godzilla on hiatus for a while, so it likely won't happen any time soon.

I might give it to Gamera. He's smarter, has a greater variety of weapons, flies, and to top all that, he'd be the "good guy". It would have to be a throwback to those old Godzilla films where he was the "villain".

Isn't Toho making a new Godzilla.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zacdac In reply to mrstupes [2005-05-09 21:06:24 +0000 UTC]

They've already made it... it's called GODZILLA FINAL WARS, and is directed by current flavour of the moment, Ryuhei Kitamura (who also did the yakuza-zombie-kungfu movie VERSUS). It looks over-the-top, but I'm still anxious to see it. It features something like 15 Kaiju all together, so it'll be a huge monster-fest.

Toho has also publicly said that this will be the "last" Godzilla movie. Nobody really buys that, though... They've retired Godzilla in the past, and he's always come back. They may take a short break, but I'm reasonably certain we'll have another Godzilla film inside of 5 years.

Ergo, the reason why they never duked it out was because they were from different studios.

(Two different versions of Godzilla vs King Kong exist)

zacdac In reply to avancna [2005-05-06 03:25:47 +0000 UTC]

It's actually a common misunderstanding that there are two different versions of GODZILLA VS KING KONG, with different endings.

There is just one movie. At the end, Godzilla and Kong spill off a cliff into the ocean, and the humans watch on in suspense. Then Kong emerges and begins swimming off.

In one version of the film, that's it... that's the end. We are left to wonder whether Kong has won and is swimming home, or whether Godzilla sent him packing. In the other version, this final shot is dubbed over with the sound of Godzilla's victory roar... implying that Godzilla is the victor. That's it. Only the sound of a roar seperates these 2 editions.

There wasn't a big problem shooting this crossover because Universal and Toho weren't direct competitors... Universal allowed Kong to be used (although a much different, bigger version of him, with electricity powers), and the Japanese even made a sequel to their Kong, with a MechaKong in it.

Daiei and Toho were too much at odds though to ever have done a crossover movie back then...

Well, they aren't identical, either.

zacdac In reply to avancna [2005-05-06 04:47:13 +0000 UTC]

Nope. One is english dubbed too. So I guess that counts as a difference.

But they are the same film.

Incidentally, it's also one of my favourite oldschool Godzilla movies... despite the fact that the monster suits are completely ridiculous (or perhaps because of this fact). But the monster fights are pretty brutal and physical, and the miniature model work is exquisite.

I just generally like the 1960's ones... the japanese starlets of that decade are mondo hot.

I'm sure it's just a matter of the 1960's aesthetic and my own personal associations, but a lot of the leading women in old Japanese movies had a classy sexiness to them, which later gave way to the ubiquitous "cutesy" thing that persists till today.

Hey... "cute" is good too... but variety is the spice of life and all that. It just seems like right now, "cuteness" is a japanese national obsession. At least based on the view of the culture we get in the "west".

Great googly moogly!

So many comments so soon!

Godzilla and Gamera never fought, because they were in competition. Godzilla was Toho's monster and Gamera was Daiei's. Generally through the old days, Gamera's movies were even sillier and more child-oriented than Godzilla's.

That changed in the 90's when Daiei ressurected Gamera in a new critically acclaimed 3-movie trilogy.

Nowadays, the rights for both monsters are owned by Sony, and there have been some very definite rumblings about a Gamera vs Godzilla movie... though Toho is planning on putting Godzilla on hiatus for a while, so it won't be soon.

I'd love to see it, personally... I've really come to love Gamera... I think he could take Godzilla. Maybe.
