What if Wood Zone made it into the public release of Sonic 2? What would it have looked like? Here is what I had come up with to answer the question.

The layout mostly resembles the very unfinished Simon Wai version, but let's just say that I've made the map a lot bigger. This meant that I had to painstakingly make new parts whilst keeping true to the original tileset at the same time. New gimmicks I had implemented include the little wooden boards that act as springs, inspired by the one concept art showing off Sonic 2's "Secret Jungle", and the little bark fragments above the vertical tree trunks with holes in them to resemble large vertical tunnels to fit with the horizontal and L-shaped tunnels.

I've made an upper route above the first tree tunnel, and a bottom route below the first bridge opening about a couple seconds into the level within an area past where the unfinished level ended. The lower route is supposed to be longer than the middle and upper routes due to it going under the initial spawn area.

Since there's no boss here, I'd consider putting down... well I don't know, "Machete Eggman", "Egg Axe", or something fitting for a jungle setting? Take your pick.

According to Sonic 2's development, Wood Zone was supposed to be the "Present" version of Casino Night since Sonic 2 was supposed to implement time travelling. Because of this, if I suggested to have a major update for the mobile port, I'd just add a tunnel near the end of Aquatic Ruin Act 2 and make a little falling transition scene to Wood Zone, similar to the transition from Mystic Cave to Hidden Palace via the infamous spike pit on the lower route. Like Hidden Palace, Wood Zone would only be a single level. To prove my point, here's how I think this will run down:

NORMAL ZONE ORDER: Aquatic Ruin 2, Aquatic Ruin Boss, Casino Night 1 & 2, Hill Top 1

Then if you go to Wood Zone, then...

Aquatic Ruin 2, Wood Zone, Hill Top 1

See what I did there? I skipped Casino Night because of the time travelling mechanic. By going to Wood Zone, you would remain in the time zone that you are currently in. At that point, you only need to go to the future (The 3-Act Kaizo of Metropolis) after Oil Ocean, which the latter (Oil Ocean) would be under "Present 2". I would consider Wood Zone as an easier version of Casino Night. It's a pretty good time saving zone for speedrunning Sonic 2, especially on the mobile port.

If you are wondering how long I had spent on working on this layout, it took a month to assemble every existing chunk together and make some new ones. I can take any critique. I know there may be some things I could fix up.
