Description
Up close shot of the sort of paper feathers I make to create my birds. This shot is from the wing of one of my owl sculptures. Different cutting angle and frequency of cuts gives different styles of feathers, experimentation is the key
I just use a trusty pair of scissors and watercolour paper.

Not at all, thank you! Each feather is cut out with scissors in a little leaf shape. Then with the same pair of trusty feathers I cut quickly and many times all around the front edge of the paper shape, keeping the direction as it would appear on a real feather. Then I start at the bottom and layer my way up, one line of feathers at a time. I really look at reference of birds feathers to get the layering right. Doesn't really look right until the whole bird is covered. Have a go and post pics on here for all to see

Beautiful! Your technique is just the sort of type I'm looking for to make my mythological creatures sculptures. These details would look great on a harpy*
*= a mythological bird from Greek tales with the lower body of a vulture or bird of prey and the face of a female, typically beautiful, but don't get one angry or else they will turn into a vulture-like form and swiftly eat you.
